I hated Valentine's day when I was a child at school, because the teachers always made everyone bring in cards for the whole class. The sheer hypocrisy of receiving cards from the same kids who hated your guts, was staggering. And they hadn't even picked them out, themselves. Their parents bought cheap packets of variety cards, and all the kids had to do was write names on the envelopes. And if you didn't bring in cards for your darling classmates, you couldn't have any punch and cookies.
They punished kids for not bringing anything??
That's so wrong!! I personally hated Valentine's day for the same reasons as you, and I still do. I got very mad at my ex the first Valentine's Day we were together. He spent all year acting like a jerk, treating me like crap and then figured he'd be nice because social conformity said it should be so. I can say I hope I earned the "B" word on that occasion. If you can't be nice the other days of the year, why would you try to be on that one day?
(Okay, I'm done ranting for this year.)
I always loved Valentine's Day in elementary school. Every year the class made a beautiful "drop box" or mail box by decorating a cardboard box. There was a slit in the top for dropping in your valentines. I thought the valentines were beautiful and loved sending them to all of my class mates. Of course I liked receiving them too. Back in those days, school wasn't so hard and I don't think anyone seriously disliked me. I just kept to myself most of the time, but no one then was evil or malicious towards me. I think they respected my intelligence and my position at the top of the class. They admired me in many ways I think. The valentines in those days were not so commercial and theme oriented. Hearts & flowers, Dogs & Cats. We weren't forced to bring in valentines, we could if we wanted to.
This year, my husband gave me a hammock swing/chair that is so comfy to climb into and read from, and you can pull up your legs and use your heels to open it up to hold your full body. I gave him a water-repellent wire-bound book which identifies all saltwater fish in Florida along with the regulations for their size and daily limit. We bought some tequila and margarita mix and cooked lobster tail and scallops. Then we watched "Seven Years In Tibet" and it was a very nice Valentine's Day for us.
