New possible Aspie

Hello Wrong Planet! I'm Allison, 18 years old, and I have just graduated from high school. I have no exact diagnosis of Aspergers but I really feel that I am an Aspie for quite some time now. Last summer I was actually diagnosed with Non-Verbal Learning Disorder which I'm not sure if I think I have or not but to be honest, I am still not 100 percent clear on what the disorder is.

In September I will be starting college and will be living away from home. Although I was excited at first, now I am just extremely nervous. I'm really scared that I will not be able to make friends or be able to talk to people comfortably. I don't want college to be like high school all over again . I already had orientation and I am so scared, I wasn't really able to connect with any of the students there or make friends.

I just looked up NVLD and (at least the wikipedia article) was very interesting. There is so much variety on the spectrum.

Good luck in college. It (minus the drinking component) was waaaaaay better than high school.

I too was anxious too about going. But living in a dorm, meeting people through campus groups who shared mutual interests, and having a fresh start were so good for me socially. It seems counterintuitive for a person who is anxious socially to enjoy living in a group situation like that but it made it so easy to meet and make lasting friendships, some of which I maintain to this day.

Believe me, you will find people to connect with. Follow your interests- someone is bound to share at least one of them, right?

riverotter, I'm glad to hear that you had a good college experience and made friends in college because I've read some negative experiences of Aspies in colleges from some people here. I figure among all the usual gregarious college crowd there is always those completely different from the rest.
