hello all,

im new around here so hello and all that i found the website during my search for information on asperger's syndrome.

well i have no actual diagnosis yet i am making an appt with my GP to discuss things with him. recently i was asked if i was an aspie, i was confused on what they were asking i had never heard that term in my life.

so upon googling "aspie" then reading about asperger's syndrome i noticed a lot of things that i could apply to myself.

i did find a whats your AQ test (if your familiar i scored a 33) had my wife take the same test and she scored down in the normal ranges

i also found a longer test that was 150 questions long and i scored a 126/200 and the result of it was probable that i actually am an aspie.

so i guess was looking for advice on how to go about getting tested for it or how you were diagnosed for it

Hi there and welcome.

I think the way of being diagnosed is somewhat different in various countries, so it would help to know from which part of the world you were.

i think you should examine typical traits.

do you pace or "stim" that is fiddle w your fingers, touch objects repeatedly, clench muscles, fists, jaws, repeatedly? rythmically? do you rock? do you toe-walk?

do you notice details, is that a "thing" of yours, compared to your friends?

how successfull are your conversation topics, among people, compared to others? do you end up ranting allone a lot? monologues? or are you completely silent? how do you react to sudden visits? do they excite you, or freak you out, or none?

I'm curious as to who it was that first asked if you were an Aspie. Did they actually use that term? I've just never heard an Enty say that word before, ever, and I'm wondering if the person who asked you has AS themselves.

They have family that has it so she is familiar with it.

as far as looking at traits -

i do not have any traits like toe-walking , rocking but i do pace alot if im stressed or trying to think or very upset.....

i get majorly stressed/angry if my daily plans (that i have mapped out previously) suddenly change

as far as details yes i would say i am, i see patterns in things or notice things that are obvious to me but not to others

communication -

this is situational to me .....when at work I do support for our software/hardware its pretty structured and usually they just answer my questions until i figure it out, but i have noticed in between questions i usually put them on hold or just dont say anything while i think or work on the remote until its fixed where other employees seem to talk alot more.

at home w/ my wife - this is where it seems i have the worse trouble. trying to keep this as short as i can but i do not empathize with her over anything which upsets her greatly but i just dont.

public - I am just silent normally unless im with someone i know such as my wife but i hate going to malls or shopping for anything so rarely do it. i prefer to go home and read play video games or tear apart a computer and tinker with it

anything that interests me i usually go crazy with it either researching everything i can or if you take WoW for instance play for 8-12 hours at a time ( i quit that i work too much now)

ive been reading alot about it and like i said i have some attributes that i can personally see fitting and not others, but smth is going on so that is why im wanting to know how to go bout getting a clear diagnosis

Curiously, you may find that some of the things you think now don't really apply to you, will flash on you later in epiphany moments when you realize "oh, wow, I do do that - I just never realized that's what it was."

For instance, when I first read the phrase "may see lights or hear sounds that others do not" I thought that meant hallucinations. Later I recalled a time when I referenced a very high-pitched squealing noise that old vacuum-tube televisions used to make to a roomful of people and got a roomful of blank stares in return. An electronics buff friend who happened to be there explained what it was and that it was supposedly one of those ultrasonic noises only dogs can hear. I was so used to it growing up, it never even occurred to me that others couldn't hear it.

Though I knew right away when I read about stims that it very much applied to me, I rock and sway pretty much constantly, I didn't identify with hand-flapping. I knew a kid in junior high who did it a lot and I always thought it looked very goofy (like my rocking and swaying didn't look odd to everybody else). Later I realized that when I'm walking through crowded places, I hold my keys in my right hand and flip my wrist up and down so they click together - in a classic hand-flapping gesture.

That makes sense, Willard. I look back symptoms from my childhood that either don't bother me anymore, I've learned to live with, I've learned to ignore, or have outgrown. In the case of sound, I don't think I hear as well as I used to.
