I was wondering how many members here are over 30 years old. I'm 32, and at first glance it seems a lot of you are much younger. For those who are closer to my age, how long did it take you to find out what was really going on? Also, do you ever feel like you missed out on so much in your life due to having Asperger's? I'd love to compare other people's experiences to my own.

I'm 32. I found out about Asperger's about a year and a half ago. AS is so much of a part of who I am that I really can't imagine what my life would have been like without it. I wouldn't be the same person. I do wish I had known sooner, though. My outlook on life has improved dramatically in the last year.

I'm 48 but I'm an NT with an Autistic wife. So I suppose I don't really count.

I like this site though.

I am over 50 and was diagnosed with Autism 10 years ago. I don't think I missed out on anything but my autism causes alot of problems in my marriage so I hate that.

I'm 38 and have always been considered weird. I always just thought of it as normal and everyone was a little wierd it wasnt till my son began having problems at school got diagnosed that I saw that my and his way of thinking is what is considered not nt I cant think about missing much of anything in my life becuse if I was NT I'd be a diffferent person and in general I like myself the way I am. I think there are many more people with AS of all ages that are not diagnosed just becuse the diagosis wasnt around till the 90s. BTW are they ever going to build a Stews in Orange or what?

I'm 41 and was diagnosed less than two weeks ago. I've suspected it for much longer, though.

There are things I could have done differently without AS, I guess, but then again, this is what I am and I can't or wouldn't want to change.

Beats me. People here like to make a huge issue out of everything. Very annoying.

So, where in New England are you?

I'm 38 and don't have a dx, but I possess AS traits. I don't know if I have it or not, but I can relate to the experiences of those here who have been diagnosed.

Hello, I am 36
Didn't really know about AS until my son was diagnosed two years ago. Then his therapists and others suggested I look into it as they suspected I also had it. Diagnosed last year. I also have another son with ASD (HFA) and a NT daughter.

I think the major impairments were socially, and communication. Communication is a big problem for me. The other party is usually either lost or the message I intended isn't what was received.

I'm 49, you know, an old guy. I'll be back in a minute...

HEY YOU KIDS, GET OFF THE LAWN!! !

OK, back now.

I first heard something about AS in November last year, but was busy so just bookmarked it. I came back to the article late December and took half a dozen online tests. All showed moderate AS. At least now I know why I've been so weird all my life.

I'm 33 and I was diagnosed 3 years ago.
I had extreme concentration problems in school and I just stopped doing homework after 6th grade, math I gave up at age 8 wich is funny, as I actually loved math before I started school. I still actually like math even though I basically can't even do elementary school math and I wish I could learn something really complicated. My brain just melts when I try to concentrate on something and loosing my concentration almost makes me hysterical.

If I had been a kid today, they would probably have recommended my parents to put me on some kind of drug, but they would probably have refused to do so. I could have gotten some thing of adapted education plan so I would have an adapted high school education that would have led to an adapted job, like many Aspie kids have in Norway today.

I just crossed the over-30 threshold today. I've known about my autism since I was little and have somehow always been conscious of how it's affected me, although the spectrum has expanded so much since the late '70s, so I think a fresh diagnosis could be in order.

Have I missed out on a lot? Well, some, I guess. No dates or girlfriends, very few real-life friends until recently, and not a whole lot of self-esteem. OTOH, I've progressed much more than any doctors would have thought - I'm living independently, holding down a job and acting pretty much 100% normal.
