I work at a grocery store, and I have been here for almost the past 11 years. It is a big store and my job is to stand out front and offer help to customers. There is this gap in the railing so customers can take their carts of groceries out into the parking lot. People use this a lot. I have to get the carts they leave in the parking lot and taking them back and putting them to the front is a bit of a strategy. first I have to watch for cars going on the frontstreet in front of the store, and tell them to wait, and then when there are people going out the door of the store by the gap, i have to tell them "excuse me" so I can go on by. Because of this, sometimes they look at me like I am "the face of hate". One time, geez, this old man was so angry at me when I scratched his car, he told me off in front of the whole store, on 4/2/08. But 2 witnesses told the manager what happened and the old man also got mad at one of the witnesses! I laugh about it now but I hate this job but I have to keep going there and earning the money (which I don't make much of). Also I worked at another shoppers for 3 years but I wasn't comfortable there being bossed around so I left. I had this job once a week for 3 years during being at this shoppers for 11 years.

This had been the only time someone I never even knew before yelled at me at this level at my job, by the way. Gotta go back out there tomorrow!

Right now, I am trying to look for a different job. But right now, it's this one I can't stand. Later on, when I feel like it I want to tell about things I heard that customers said over the years, things said to each other, and to me , over the past 11 years. I know lots of other people hate their jobs. I know lots of people don't even have jobs. I keep telling myself that there is much more in life to just pushing carts. I keep telling myself "I can't do this". It should be "I don't wanna do this". Another thing I hate about my job is all the magazines in the store and I try to ignore them and not even look at them as I walk by.

I admire how you stick to your work, even if it is difficult and people yell at you. I explain medicare to elderly people over the phone and this is a difficult job, too. Neither you nor I can not work, we have to support ourselves. I was thinking about something that might help you in your business but I don't want to seem like I am selling a product.

for ten bucks it is nice to know if there is a scratch you can whip out your pen and remove the scratch quickly. Even if they decline your help, you have the confidence and satisfaction of being able to offer.

and welcome to WrongPlanet, welcome home! :D

To sinsboldly: Thanks for the suggestion. I hope you are O.K. and it is a shame that people have to do jobs we hate, we know we would like to do something we like but it is a shame that people are stuck with jobs they hate.

well, it doesn't stop with the job, life can be a trap at best and it takes a bit of psyching up to keep on going, sometimes.

I don't hate my job, I simply don't want to do it as much as I do.

Sometimes, at my job, when older people think I am stealing their groceries when I am trying to help them, they ask me some yes-or-no question, and they have me answer yes or no, then they have a snappy comeback answer for me, or in the past either a customer or employee used to "lastword" me. But this was in the past.
Things from the past still bother me sometimes and some people would say "get over it" I feel like, but some people have a much harder time than others just to let things go. I am a person like that who can't forget about mishaps so easily. But the way my mind works, sometimes it doesn't bother me and sometimes it does.
Back in the fall of 2003, the were these beer commercials with singers praising "Real men of Genius" with a male singer and female backup singers. One "saluted" shopping cart pushers like me ("don't mock my smock"). It was all just for fun, but I still remember.

For a long time I had to wear this Orange smock with a front pocket. They were no longer used in 2006. Only a week ago I was issued a new, glow-in-the-dark color smock with holes all around. I like this one better, but they say I still have to wear my new thick black shirt under it, and I don't understand because it's still hot out there these days. But after I take the shirt off near the end of my shift, I guess it's no big deal to them

I am not really into many rock/ pop/ any type of music band from the 80s, but one musician I really liked from the 80s was Eddy Grant. He was more than just a one-hit wonder (electric avenue). His songs are a good getaway from the real world for me.
