Hi, I'm Will, I'm new here, of course...I'm the father of an 18 year old who was diagnosed just this year as AS. Our pediatrician had said that she suspected as much, and this was a couple of years ago, but there were just so many things Sam did so well. On the other hand, he's largely homeschooled, so maybe that's why we let things slip beneath our notice.

He did not do well in elementary school, so we took him out to homeschool him. He was an excellent student, by our standards, both of us college educated professional types...We sent him back to public school in 10th grade, and he had a hell of a time, socially -- killed academically, of course! So we put him into a small private school that catered to homeschoolers, brought in science and math teachers, that sort of thing. He was largely an A student, and was the valedictorian of his class of four. Well, still the valedictorian!

So now that he's just trying to launch his life, he's hit with this diagnosis, and hates it, denies it, won't work with it -- and wants to go to college.

Help?

Welcome!

Last night I heard a successful, 50-something Aspie suggest to a parent that an Aspie child might begin in a local college part-time (one or two classes) while also working part-time.

For me, college was infinitely better than elementary or high school because I was left alone. Whew!
I homeschooled my aspie until college, and he did fine in college.
