hello,
i'm 27 and just diagnosed aspie in the last few months. just graduated university, now working as a programmer. struggling with all the usual stuff, but my main thing at the moment is sensory issues. i have to get clothes for work and i'm one of those people who buys the same clothes, same model, from the same store year after year and i can't seem to find anything "new" that feels okay on my body :(

i've recently discovered deep pressure and weighted stuff, like pressure vest and weighted blanket. they say use needs to be supervised by your occupational therapist, but in canada you don't get an occupational therapist referral if you are diagnosed aspie as an adult... in fact, when you get diagnosed as an adult they just say "you're aspie", send the report back to your doc and you're done. not sure what to do ...

Use the pressure and weights any way that feels good. Why would it need to be supervised?
Oh, Hi!

Hey, welcome to WP. I'm in the GTA too. :) AS for the weighted items, the supervision aspect is for children. It's to make sure people don't use weights that are too heavy on a small body. As an adult, you'll be fine. So do what makes you feel comfortable. 8)

In October the Geneva center holds the International Autism Symposium at the MTCC and it's totally worth going to for the 3 days. Plus, there are tons of vendors and you can save a lot of money by buying from them directly while you're there. Just something to think about. :)

As for clothing, have you tried Marks Work Wearhouse? They're clothes are softer against your skin than other brands.

Hiya. Welcome to WP.

I've been to Toronto - a nice place. Stayed there for two-and-a-bit-weeks on holiday. Lots of nice things to see around there. :)

Hey, welcome on WP, fellow Torontonian! :D
I have an obsession with meeting Aspies from Toronto. Are you a member of the Asperger`s Association of Ontario adult group?

I want to know more about this... does it cost money? Are there going to be guest speakers or workshops... what`s it about?

I agree with this. I used to wear my mom`s clothes often because they are so comfy, especially the sweaters. When my mom caught me borrowing her clothing, I found out that they are from Mark`s. :P

Ahhh! Me too! I know quite a few already: they are all pretty awesome. :D I'd like to know more about the adult group if possible...are you a member yourself?

As for the Geneva Centre Symposium, from what I've heard it's quite the informative experience. It's usually 3-4 days of guest speakers and workshops (Temple Grandin, Tony Attwood, and other "autism gurus" usually show up). The downside is that it costs a pile of money which is why I haven't attended one as of yet. :(

My diagnoses - social anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

I’m no longer involved with the ASD world.

Nope, not yet. The group is for those who are 19 and older, so I'm going to wait until I turn 19 to join. Besides, I want to wait until I get an official diagnosis before I join, which is hopefully going to take only a month more. Right now, I'm unofficially diagnosed by my school psychologist.

That sucks that you're unable to join right away...but luckily you have one more year to go! If it's not too personal, where are you planning on getting a diagnosis? The CAMH centre downtown is your best bet if you're still looking for a professional.

I'm over 21 so I'd like to join the group...and perhaps see you out in the future. :) I went to their website though and didn't find much info on it. Do you have any of their contact info?

For the link to the group, you first have to go to "community resources" and then select "workshops and groups" on the ASO page. The link to the information page is right at the top of that page. I didn't notice it at first, either. Here's the link for your convenience: http://www.aspergers.ca/index.php?optio ... &Itemid=41 and it's the adult social group.

About the diagnosis: I first thought that I was going to get a diagnosis at school, but then I found out that there's only a psychologist at school and she can't diagnose me. I've met with her 2 times so far and she said that she was going to hook me up with a specialist at CAMH. However, I need my family doctor to refer me to CAMH, and it's taking her a very long time to do. There's a rule that I can't phone her receptionist to ask her about this, so I'm going to see my family doctor on Tuesday (although I saw her last week as well!) to ask her if she made the referral. Her receptionist barely speaks English. I'd happily get another family doctor if I could.
