I signed up for this forum because my son was recently officially diagnosed with AS after years of speculation on my part. However, reading through some of the forum, it seems like I have quite a few of the characteristics of AS myself. The one that I find most interesting is the whole "stimming" thing, since I had no idea there were other people who did that. That's not the only thing, of course, and there are some areas in which I definitely do NOT fit the profile (I think, anyway). I'm just wondering if there's any point this late in my life (I'll be 45 in November) in pursuing the answer to my question. Having struggled with depression most of my adult life, I've had lots of opportunity to explore my own psyche. I *think* I'm fairly well-adjusted, even though I'm probably going to be on anti-depressants for the rest of my life, so it's not like I'm in any acute distress right now. I'm curious, though, if that makes sense. Especially in light of my son's diagnosis.

Any words of advice?

Not everybody has all the symptoms, and if you have even one or two, you may still have AS.

Though there is no substitute for a proper medical diagnosis here are a
couple of sites that give you an idea if you are AS or otherwise:

Hello all,

Thank goodness for this forum

I hope to find some answers to my questions here.

I am 43 years old and have some of the symptoms of AS. When i was a child I had many more, but my confusion is this...now i'm older, and I am only just coming to the realisation that i may have it...i'm confused because the symtoms I have are for the most part are no longer there...I have social anxiety and spent a great deal of time trying to "cure" it without much success (20 years) I still cannot form freindships and find social situations confusing and over the years just found it easier to avoid them. I am thinking about seeing my GP for diagnosis of AS but feel reluctant at the moment for the above reasons.

Your advice would be much appreciated.

Hi
Well, I am 50 years old and have some of the symptoms of AS...

When i was a child I had many more, now that I'm older, and In fact I have am only just coming to the realization that i may have it...

The symptoms I had are, for the most part, are no longer there, because I have spent my entire life studying how to fit in...

Ivae made my own formal study of "rapport", how to act cool.. etc.

Fortunately, I never had a problem with humor, except my humor tends to be over most peoples heads.

So, I'm highly socialised, but sometimes I still slip up and blow it, get fired, loose a relationship etc.

Because when I get tired or upset, and drop my mask, so lot of it comes right back.
