Hi
I joined initially as my daughter (4 year old) has been diagnosed with aspergers. After reading/learning more about it, I think that I may have it. Heres why.
Very socially awkward. Teased a lot as a kid. Didn't talk in public or at school from about 4th grade-10th grade out of social phobia.
Sound sensitivity. Can NOT block out background sounds, to the point where it impedes my ability to function. The sound of other people chewing is like glass being broken in my head.
I don't have any friend.
Have been diagnosed as depression, and/or ADD at various points.
Very creative/bright but had massive problems at school.
Problems looking people in the eye.
Have a very difficult time having appropriate conversations, yet at the same time I really really really want to make and maintain friendships.
My dad was probably on the spectrum but undiagnosed. There is a long history of mental illnesses and/genius on his side of the family.
Should I consider myself undiagnosed aspergers? Should I try to get diagnosed? Does it matter?
I NEED structure. I can have problems controlling my anger/tears when stressed.

My main problem at this point is that my daughter's teacher and social skills therapist are telling me I should work on getting her more playdates and reinforcing social skills for her but I don't know how to go about making friends with other moms.

Thanks for listening to my rant.

Could be AS. It might help you get help, especially for your daughter, if you're struggling to do what's being suggested. Whether AS or not, if you want help from some services, you have to go through their system. :(

Hello PenguinMom, welcome to WrongPlanet!

Here's an online test that can give you an indication, if you score 32 to 50 you might have a Autism Spectrum Disorder.

I think getting diagnosed can be helpful and you can get help once you have a diagnosis.

Hey PenguinMom, Welcome to Wrongplanet :D !

Yea, it could be that you have aspergers or autism, i actually do recommend getting diagnosed, maybe that might help.
I've been diagnosed but i never knew anything about it until i was 13 and why was i so different and everything? I simply just couldn't understand until today.

Have you tried googling any advices about it, it might come up with a good information? Or probably if theres a club near by that she could join with other kids about or try to encourage her to play with other kids, that might help her develop her social skills but its not going to be easy though but requires love and abit of hard work. :)

Btw glad you joined this site :) because this is the best place to share out personal experience, you don't have to be exactly open about it but just giving you a quick idea.
