This is very true.
I can, however, imagine a situation where a person might grow up with the characteristics - but in a sympathetic environment (home schooling, etc.), so that the characteristics don't rise to the level of impairments. Then, later in life, a change in situation would cause the person to really notice their "differences." (I expect the characteristics would almost certainly be quite mild.)
I think for the vast majority of people on the spectrum, that change occurs by the time the person begins to interact with non-family members - and almost certainly by the time the person enters adolescence.
