hello everyone,

I'm an adult from New York that was diagnosed as a child with minimal brain
dysfunction, speech and motor skills delays. My parents pulled me out of therapy
after awhile saying it was a waste of money.

I told my dr. I have repetitive motions like rocking and head banging and she asked
many questions and thinks I have autism and maybe OCD and will see a specialist.

Can someone explain what will happen next.

eddie

I was just recently officially diagnosed with AS. I spend upwards of 10-15 hours (split among several days) taking various tests (around 15 tests I think). These tests included:

1. ASDS - AS Diagnostic Scale
2. A bunch of memory tests (she told a story, I had to repeat it back as best I could; I had to memorize a picture involving various people and then be able to describe later what was going on and who was performing what task, etc)
3. Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (she gave me a bunch of cards with a picture story being told, I had to put them in an order that made sense)
4. Personal Factor Personality Inventory test
5. Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS)- basically an IQ test.
6. Another test that required me to use multi-shaded blocks to replicate an image on a card, I don't know which test that was, I know I didn't enjoy it!
(I have my psych report in front of me, that is how I know all the names and stuff! :) )

It was all rather fascinating to me. My psychologist spent a lot of time dealing with the IQ tests, she felt an AS diagnosis required a higher IQ score.

I had the multi-shaded block test as part of my WAIS test, when I had my Dyspraxia diagnosis (AS is currently undiagnosed.. :( ). Weirdly, I found it the most fun part of the test!

I have never had a big interest in puzzles like the block test, but I can see how it would be fun for others! :). I enjoyed the memory bits, I have an excellent fact retention (short term at least). I was able to recall almost every detail of the stories and or pictures that I was shown. :)

I really don't know what I am going to do with my diagnosis (I just received it a week ago today). I had two main reasons for seeking a dx. The first was for simple confirmation of my self-diagnosis, I figured out I had it a few years ago. My second reason was for validation if the time ever comes that I inform my family (I doubt they would trust my self diagnosis, because I have developed fairly good coping skills and act fairly "normal").

As for treatment, I don't think I would benefit much. I am satisfied with who I am and I don't feel the need to seek help in teaching me to interact with people when I derive little to no enjoyment in the company of others. I am not saying you, or anyone else, shouldn't seek treatment if they want to change or grow in specific ways, it is just not for me.

Again, my dx is fairly new (I was also diagnosed with chronic depression which is possibly affecting my drive to change), so I may change my mind on this, given more time.
