I have Asperger's syndrome.

I wondered, I suspected, I read, I researched, and now I'm sure. It just fits. So here we go, I'm saying it for the first time: I'm an aspie.

Now what? I feel pretty upset suddenly as I write this. What do I do?

well, just remember you are the same person you were before you figured it out. Don't worry that other people might find out, because they have known something was up with you before you knew, too! :D

So relax, you are in for a couple of years of self examination, going over your past to see your history like you got a new pair of glasses. Be easy on yourself, and try not to blame - not yourself or anyone else. WP will be here for you and you will have a lot of other people that have gone though the same thing as yourself.

Welcome home, righton

Merle

I second what Merle said.

It's been about a year and a half since I figured it out for myself, and trust me, that phase of over-analysing everything you say and do DOES fade away eventually. With me, it turned out I'd been tested for all sorts only a year or so after AS became an official diagnosis, in a small town in England that probably still hasn't heard of it! Now my university has noticed it, and they're going to get me formally assessed this year. And I'm finding that having found out for myself some time ago has helped - I'm not freaking out and going "Asperger's Syndrome?! What is that??? Is it terminal??? I have a disability?!" - I'm thinking more along the lines of "right, so there's a medical label for my personality. Hey - that's pretty interesting! I wonder if there's actually other people like me...?". And so, I found WP. Welcome home!

I can relate to what you are saying righton. One positive though that I am getting from all this is that now I am taking it a little easier on myself as I use to think my social dysfunction was a result of me not being brave enough or honest enough with people to make connections. Now I can see it is a little deeper than just that. I suppose there are much worse things to have as well.

I am thinking about getting it properly diagnosed. Funny thing is, I have seen therapists, psychiatrists and I even participated in a small group for people with severe social anxiety for the longest time which I found ultimately unhelpful. No one picked up that it was AS. And it is so obvious that that is what it is .. it's ridiculous. I had to explain to my current therapist what avoidant personality disorder is... I might have to get better more appropriate therapy.

Get tested to see if you do or not or just ignore the label and not care about it.

Earlier in his forum I posted something about how I came to a few conclusions about myself.

You might want to check out the RDOS Aspie quiz: http://www.rdos.net/eng/Aspie-quiz.php

Instead of moping about what you cannot do, find something you can do and then do it well...
