I was just diagnosed with Asperger's in December. A few years ago I heard a program on it. Hearing people discuss their lives with Asperger's was like listening to a description of myself. As I started reading about it, I kept seeing myself over and over again, and knew I had finally found why I was always so "weird" throughout my life. Last fall, I had finally decided to seek a diagnosis. I took a look online, and found there was a psychologist specializing in adult asperger's not far from me.

The process was quite different then what I had expected. I had thought I might talk to her once or twice and she would offer her diagnosis. While there was some conversation involved, there was also four or five sessions of standardized psychological tests. After that was finished, she said I absolutely had Asperger's, and I received a written report detailing the results of the tests and evaluation.

I had thought the diagnosis wouldn't seem very significant because it was just the opinion of one person. After seeing what an extensive process was involved, though, it does seem authoritative.
