I am the mother of a 5 year old boy with aspergers, we just found out a couple of months ago and I am looking for support, also curious if there are any other parents with children obsessed with washers and dryers, or how to handle obsessions. Hope to make friends here! Thanks for reading!

Welcome to WrongPlanet. :)

The most important thing to remember, is that acceptance is the best cure, and it's the cheapest one, as well. You should also get him to help you with the laundry, if washers and dryers are his obsession. I only wish that my mum went along with my obsessions...I wouldn't have been so depressed and suicidal in high school.

Cockney,

My 7 year old has recently been diagnosed, though I have known since he was like 6 months old that his mental processess worked differently (we said "Levi dances to his own drummer.') Levi is obsessed with Pokemon cards. I guess you would say just leave him alone and let him do his thing? If I play with him and he doesn't win, he freaks out. Sometimes even if he's winning and things aren't going his way he freaks out. Should I let him win? How can I spend time with him doing something he's into without these meltdowns? He's really bright (140+IQ but non-compliant in testing) so he does win most of the time, but doesn't he have to learn that he doesn't always have to win? How is that for you? He's like that with almost everything--if he can't do it perfectly, he doesn't want to do it.
