Does it infuriate any one else that Kevin Sorbo's Hercules is based more on Thesseus one of Hercules' friends than Hercules and yet is still called Hercules?

Mine was one of the many obscure topics I am knowledgeable about. He was a Theban General, who defeated Sparta and finally united Greece. Only 9 years later, Phillip of Macedon repeated the effort under a foreign flag. Thebes was like Sparta, but less strict, it was said the native Hercules founded Sparta. Thebes built its military similar to Sparta only when the fight between the two occurred Epimonandas used a deeper formation on Sparta's strong side. Sparta had fewer soldiers at this point about 2,000 down from 9,000 at its height. Leonides would have been heartbroken at their decline. Sometimes I use other obsure ancient Greek names, like Erastothenes or Heron or Thesseus.

My name like yours, is also taken from Greek mythology.

Zephyr was the Greek god of the west wind, which was considered the gentlest wind. The colder north wind was called Boreas. The warm west wind indicated the coming spring season awaking the Earth after winter.

Zephyr was the son of Astraeus and the goddess of the dawn, Eos. Some say that his wife was the goddess of the rainbow, Iris. However, Zephyr was the father of two immortal horses, Xanthus and Balius, bore by the Harpy, Podarge. The Harpies were terrifying monsters with the head and trunk of a woman and the tail, wings, legs and talons of a huge bird.

Zephyr was attracted to Podarge while she was grazing beside the Ocean, after having transformed herself into a filly. The gods gave the two horses, as a wedding present, to Peleus, the father Achille.

Zephyr is also known for having caused the death of a Spartan prince, Hyacinth. Zephyr had fallen in love with Hyacinth. Unfortunately, the young man already had a relationship with the Sun god Apollo. Overwhelmed by jealousy, Zephyr seeked revenge on Hyacinth. One day Apollo was teaching Hyacinth how to hurl a discus. When Apollo flung the discus, the god of the west wind caused the discus to swerve and hit Hyacinth's head. Hyacinth died and from his blood fell on the homonymous flower. On the hyacinth flower the initial letters of the young Spartan prince can still be read.

Hello, I don't know who Kevin Sorbo is.

These are the reasons why I chose Fiddler as a pseudonym:

1/ I play the violin, aka the fiddle
2/ I've got a soft point for words with double consonnants.

I've dealt with this on another forum so I have copied it to here:

Asparval (or AS parzival)

All my adult life I have been fascinated by the story of Perceval and the quest for the Grail. Up until recently I had no idea why this story meant so much to me. I just knew it did and couldn’t explain it.

My fascination was really for the first complete telling of the tale, that of Parzival by the 13th century writer Wolfram Von Eschenbach.

In Wolfram’s story there is no mention of the grail as a cup or vessel and he doesn’t actually tell us what the Grail is. Instead he presents it as a riddle, a mystery represented by a procession of people carrying various objects and a young girl, Repanse De Choye who is chosen to be the main barer of the Grail. If you read the story without any preconceptions brought on by the later, more widely known versions you will actually see that the Grail is really not an object but a family; a royal family in crisis because the king cannot conceive a child. It is down to Parzival as a long lost relative to rescue this family by taking over as king. The trouble is not only does Parzival have no idea that he can rescue this family but he also lacks any social skills or knowledge of the world in general and is described throughout as a fool.

The Grail is special because it is, for most, mysterious and unobtainable and, for me, the achievement of a relatively ‘normal’ life with a wife and family subconsciously became my Grail. This explains at least part of my fascination for the story but I only really understood properly after I had been diagnosed with AS. Then everything fell into place.

Parzival was a character I could identify with. Brought up in the forest, deliberately shielded from the world, he had no understanding of people and no social skills. His lack of understanding and naivety gets him repeatedly into trouble after he is lured out of isolation by the shine on the suit of armour of a Knight who he then follows.

When faced, for the first time, with the possibility of actually being part of a social group, of having a family, he has no idea what he is supposed to do. All that is required is for him to ask one question. Unfortunately it is as impossible for him to ask that question as it is for him to even understand that this is required of him. He watches the social ceremony play out in front of him completely oblivious to what is going on. He must first go away and learn enough about the world to enable him to take part and eventually understand enough to win the Grail.

As a character Parzival has many traits of AS / Parzival won the Grail / I must have reasoned that what was possible for Parzival might just be possible for me.

Um; it's a mixture. I think it began with the idea od echopersonae; then echoes of spectrums; echoes and spectres; -a can be plural (of -um), but also feminine singular; can't think of any more associations right now. Oh yes and it also has a nice sound to it... can't explain, really, something about starting with the "ek" sound and ending with "-ectra".

Don't have a clue what the poll is about.

Thanks for all the info you gave while explaining your nicknames.
Mine is simple :
1. Sparkplug because I am always moving. (ADHD inspiration)
2. Loy because my name is Laurence, and Loy is the short form of it I made up because I do not like the nickname Lolo that people made up with my name before.

Feste is a clown is Shakespeare's Twelfth Night who uses logic to show how language is deceptive...

Fenris is a wolf in Norse mythology who was bound by things that don't really exist...

That's the nature of my personality... Feste-Fenris...

vertvert, or vetiver, or vetyver, is an aromatic grass, and my favourite smell - dark, earthy, green, musky and sensuous.

I first read the name "Civet" in Laurence Yep's "Dragon of the Lost Sea" in Jr. High School. I adopted it as the name of one of my roleplaying characters.

Then, I found out that a civet is a catlike weasel of the viveridae classification. It is found mostly in Africa and Asia, and its musk is used as a stabilizer in perfumes. People also use them as a source of food, and civets were used as the scapegoats for the outbreak of the SARS virus. As far as I have heard on this, there is no conclusive evidence saying that they were in fact the cause of the disease.

Anyway, because I like animals (esp. cats) so much, the name stuck.

Magic is a nickname that most people call me by. Someone at my previous job invented it and it has stuck. it is phonetically similar to my first name.
