It seems like there are more times of: site busy, please check back in three minutes.

And I remember a while back someone saying one of the founders was no longer interested and participating. And that's fine, people move on.

But do we have a backup plan?

Don't know about a back-up plan, but have definitely noticed that the site seems to be going through yet another bad patch, very often very slow to load, or simply not loading at all, ( and it's not because of ads cluttering things up, I've got Adblock Plus on and I use Firefox ).

It's been so slow over the last couple of weeks that I have given up on posting or even reading on several occasions.

What you read was not true. I'm very active on the forums.

I can't talk to you, cuz you're the boss. (little mix of ODD, maybe?)

I do wonder about the slow response times for posting, though. I've noticed the "Online Now" counts don't coincide with the blips. Are there server issues that need to be addressed?

online now only refers to how many people are browsing the site. The slow response times correlate to how many people are "posting" to the site. If 1000 people are browsing the site, it may respond quickly, but if 1,000 people are posting messages all at once, then it's going to slow down. You may find more correlation between the "members" online number and slowdown, but even that doesn't show how many people are posting vs. how many people are just reading things. If no one ever posted and the site was read only, it would be much faster and we would never experience any issues.

I'm going to be upgrading the ram on the server very soon which should help. . .

Something that would help would be to reduce the size of your posts.
If you use the quote feature, and the quoted text is larger than 5 or 10 lines, please edit out the middle part (delete) and
keep only the first and last few lines.
Most of us don't need to see the full post you are replying to, most of us can find it with the first and last few lines.
And, it would really speed up the server.

Thanks for your kind consideration,

Robert

This I understand, but that was actually the point. Given the average number of users when I'm usually on (am, edt/600-800 online), the delay time has been higher than I would typically expect, especially since the count this evening is currently over 1000 and I haven't experienced problems. OTH, I'm not a network expert, either. :)

Alex, as someone who has taught school with all the attendant lesson preparation, and as somehow who as organized political activism, I have some understanding of the amount of work involved in organizing anything, and Thank You. Thank you for all the good work you do. And I'm sure there are many things I don't see and can just scarcely imagine.

And I hope you view my speaking in favor of a back-up plan as a positive suggestion.

well, theres always the IRC channel should this site be inaccessible at the moment. The site stability issues do have a more permanent fix that is still in planning. There are a few things that have to be worked out.
