Hi,

My son was diagnosed with autism 1 year ago, and is now 3 years, and remains non-verbal. This has set forth an eye opening chain of events which led to my own diagnosis in the spectrum this month. I now feel the validation that this is just the way i am and will always be, which has led to a stronger bond with my son. Are there more parents of autistic children who are also on the spectrum? It is very difficult, and would like some good ideas on how to cope.

Thanks,
Adam

my son is on the spectrum and he is 4 yrs old and semi verbal. I was just diagnosed in March and I have Aspergers. I am also female so that is slightly different. It's difficult but like you I have a good relationship with my son and understand him better than anyone else. His getting diagnosed led to my being diagnosed and has in fact led to many changes in our lives.

Yup... I'm one with 3 kids. It's a real pain and a blessing. I love my kids, they're the most important thing in the whole world. Autistic children can be far more loving than NT kids, I think. My son is often coming to me, "You're the best." for no other reason than attempting to verbalize what he feels. He does that repetitively... I don't know where or why he picked up the need to do that.

I love my kids. That's the best coping strategy. If they're criticised... they withdraw and suffer inside... self-doubt... nurture them with lots and lots of love and reassurance.
