Hello,

Instead of looking for work like a responsible person, I am here to learn more about fellow members of the online autism community.

I am twenty seven years old, male, live near York Pennsylvania, Bachelor's in Business Administration/Minor in Computer Studies, and I have a formal diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome.

I currently work in a temporary job assignment with a quasi government agency, and I am here to learn more about the issues within the AS community.

Yes,

I am surprised that nobody is talking about the upcoming Dover 400 race let alone forming any protests about it. I know it is the typical two Wrights make a wrong related event, if you know what I am saying.

We need to see more of people like Ari and other self advocates making noise in the mainstream. Also, who is going to take Autism Hub's place in having a centralized blog database?

Just a lot on my mind right now.

??? -- Please fill me in. There's also other forum sections on WP that might cover that news item. I don't know much about racing, and don't keep up with it.

I picked up your post in, Forum: Autism Politics, Activism, and Media Representation Posted: Sun May 16, 2010 1:51 am Subject: May 16, 2010: The Empire Strikes Back at Dover Speedway
http://www.wrongplanet.net/postp2785042 ... t=#2785042

I'm trying to understand. I am aware there's been a wide debate as to what causes Autism, but science really doesn't know why at the moment, and there's no "cure" for it either. That's why I'm not siding with anyone... until they have empirical facts that are demonstrably repeatable, to support an argument, I'm not taking sides.
Please explain why you are disturbed by the event at Dover Speedway. At least its raising awareness for Autism, whatever the cause of Autism, may be. I would only be concerned, if they were trying to portray Autistic people with the "one size fits all crazy ret*d" stereotype vs. the Autism Spectrum that is, Low Functioning to High Functioning.... so people with Aspergers continue to go without notice, misdiagnosed and suffering malpractice for years -- falling through the cracks of an ignorant medical and educational establishment.

Oddly enough, there is no traffic in the typical Autism Spectrum related blogs planning protests about this event.
Quick, we need to signal Ari.

I don't understand. Please explain. I did find some information on the web, that may allude to what you're speaking of.

Autism Debate Strains a Family and Its Charity

EXCERPT...
The Wrights’ daughter, Katie, the mother of Christian, says her parents have not given enough support to the people who believe, as she does, that the environment — specifically a synthetic mercury preservative in vaccines — is to blame. No major scientific studies have linked pediatric vaccination and autism, but many parents and their advocates persist, and a federal “vaccine court” is now reviewing nearly 4,000 such claims.
...
Ms. Wright called the statement a “character assassination.” She said she had not spoken to her father since. Ms. Wright continues to spend time with her mother, but said they had not discussed the situation.
“I totally respect if her feelings were hurt,” Mrs. Wright said. “But a lot of feelings were hurt. A lot.”
Now other autism families who hoped to put their differences aside are shouting at each other in cyberspace. “Our struggle is not and should not be against each other,” said Ilene Lainer, the mother of an autistic child and the executive director of the New York Center for Autism.

Hmmm, I am familiar with some saying that milk could in some way affect/induce Autism... but PETA got its fair share of criticism by the Autistic community, latching on to that -- as though Autism was some horrible evil "Disease".

I checked the site,
"NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race at Dover International Speedway to be Named the "Autism Speaks 400 Presented by Hershey's® Milk & Milkshakes""
http://www.autismspeaks.org/press/dover_2010.php

Here's a huge evil myth, that one day, I do hope bites the dust.

Quote:
About Autism
Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder that inhibits a person's ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by behavioral challenges. Autism spectrum disorders are diagnosed in one in 110 children in the United States, affecting four times as many boys as girls. The prevalence of autism increased 57 percent from 2002 to 2006. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called autism a national public health crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown.

Ummm, change that to : "...four times as many boys are noticed and diagnosed, than girls..."

... and due to misinformation about Autism, that's floating around... boys too, go without diagnosis.

I was born with Aspergers and despite 10 years of being tossed about in counseling nobody said or even thought to suggest, "Female with Aspergers".
My oldest daughter was tossed about in counseling until age 17 before anyone suggested "Female with Aspergers" (only because my son had already obtained a verification from a specialist).
My 2nd oldest daughter was tossed about in counseling until 7th Grade, without anyone suggesting "Aspergers".

My son went to daycare, at age 2 or 3 and immediately suspected of developmental delays and treated for them. (So what???!... my girls were too... but it never raised any alarms).

My son made it to about the 2nd or 3rd grade, and somebody began suggesting Aspergers Syndrome.

The girls went on past occupational therapy, without anyone giving a **** -- thrown out to survive on their own.

Only with the diagnosis of my son (in 2009)... did another counselor think to suspect my oldest daughter. Nobody was even considering my 7th Grader. Nobody ever gave a damn about my Female Aspergers until age 40... in fact, everytime the question was raised the "experts" ignored my concerns.

I guess for female Aspergers to bring attention to themselves, is to act like a wild, hyperactive, testosterone-driven boy... hurling threats of destroying things and temper tantrums galore.

Girls are not aggressive, tend to be passive and more introverted, therefore GO WITHOUT NOTICE OR DIAGNOSIS... "four times as much than boys..."

In reality there's probably equal numbers of girls suffering with Aspergers Syndrome as there are boys.

IGNORANT MEDICAL ESTABLISHMENT. So, what must be done for girls to get recognition?? Must they start threatening to blow up things, and violent outbursts, and exhibit extreme testosterone-induced meltdowns... afterall, that stereotype fits the myths about Aspergers, quite nicely.

I suppose my behavior of being 13 years old, sitting in a dark room, for hours, studying how to program computers... days upon days... without friends... locked in virtual isolation (1980's on an old TRS-80 when about the only so-called PC around was a thing you plug into your TV and typing
10 CLS
20 PRINT "HELLO"
30 A$ INPUT [ENTER]

 haven't programmed in a long time... but why did Bill Gates get noticed, and I was overlooked?

Slipping through the cracks, due to MYTHS and MISINFORMATION.

Yeah, there is another example on why Autism Speaks is not a trusted source of information. I went to one of their "Advancing Futures with Adults with Autism" related events last winter and I never felt so belittled in my public life, which would be told at another time.

I loved the old programming joke. Thank you JetLag, CockneyRebel, and richie for replying back too.
