Hi everyone... I was diagnosed with Asperger's just a few days ago and I'm still trying to find out about it. I'm graduating from high school at the end of June and I'm really happy to be finishing.

Is it normal to go friendless throughout the grade school system without any friends?? Just curious because that's what happened to me...

I'm in 11th grade, and so far I haven't had friends since somewhere around 5th grade, which was where people started changing interests, likings, etc. and mine just didn't.

I can usually maintain one friend and maybe like 5 loose acquaintances. But then, I'm in college and people are so eager to network they almost poop in their pants.

I had like 3 main friends through out high school. It wasn't untill I turned 19 that I started making friends and started to have a break through in how I listened and interacted with ppl. And once I got to that point it was like someone flipped a light on in my mind and I said "You mean thats all I do, Listen to them and give the data that relates to what they just said or something I know they like. Why did it take me so long to figure that out?? :) el oh el

Just hang in there and one day you WILL have more friends and people that want your opinion than you'll know what to do with :) I promise oh and good luck with college its fun.

I haven't had any real life friends since I moved from Stem, NC to Mocksvile, NC in 2000. Even back at home, I didn't really have any and if I did, it's probably cause they felt mentally, I was not on their level and felt sorry for me, I guess. No idea. My friends nowadays are all online. I even own my own ventrilo. I've really liked being by myself, but being a gamer, being by yourself and trying to play a multiplay game...doesn't work.

I too was diagnosed about maybe a year ago, and there are some things I am still learning about Aspergers. I hope you can make friends in real life. I'd like to but...I guess I'm scared of the outside world...if that makes any sense.

You've got quite a story then to tell, if you never received help from the school via an I.E.P. (individual education plan). Autism is a learning disability. Congratulations for struggling and making it through to graduation. My daughter is in the same situation as you. She struggled without help, it was painful.. diagnosed just this year, but she made it, and is graduating this year.

I didn't have friends in elementary school. One girl took interest in me in fifth grade but then she was bussed in sixth grade so I was left alone again. No friends after that until I hit my twenties and started smoking pot and suddenly I had quite a large circle of friends. I had friends all the way up until I quit doing drugs and then I couldn't find friends anymore and I've been friendless ever since and have no friends now. (Except for online friends, which I've had all along, ever since I first got onto the BBSes and FIDOnet when I was fifteen. And, yes, I consider them real friendships but they are of a very different order than having friends in meatspace.)

Normal for an Aspie. :)

If you want friends you can work on those social skills and get some. Some Aspies want friends but struggle with the skills needed to make that happen. Some are happier as loners. Everybody is different.
