YANM (yet another new member)
Hi all,
A new member who think he's got AS, I knew I had it months ago after reading the description on various sites, I've done a lot of research and I think AS is my case.
I've never gone to a psychiatrist before, I doubt I'll find a helpful one (if at all) in my area, I'm still considering going if I happen to find one though.
Hmm, I think I have a mild case, but still people find me weird when they see me for the first time, and first impressions last, I'm almost normal with those who I know for a while.
I've decided to try to change as hard as I can, I think I'm getting better, a week ago or so, I chatted with a new-to-me person for about 15 minutes, I was able to engage conversion and start new topics, I think I was confident and all, I was very proud of myself after that, hope to keep so.
That's all for now, glad I've found this website, a community that has a similar case like me, and the website was started by a computer/OSS geek (like me) too!

Hi. I'm new too. My son and I just joined a couple of days ago. I'm a geek too (Python programming, Linux (Mandrake and Ubuntu)) and a gamer. I know what you mean about people saying you're weird when they first meet you - I got that all through school. I'm not getting it as much nowadays, but I worked hard, with help from some friends who were pretty good about clear communication (unlike most NTs) and I've gotten way better at dealing with people.
I didn't realize that there was a name for the way I view the world and people, until recently. My 11yo son has some social skills issues, and his old school had suggested it might be AS. We resisted getting him "diagnosed" cuz we were nervous about drugs and labelling. But, we've recently decided that we need to talk with the school about accomodation - he's dysgraphic and needs to be allowed to use an Alphasmart or something for notetaking. It's interfering with his learning. Anyways, I had taken an online "empathy quotient" quiz, along with some others, and found out that I scored in the Aspie range on 3 out of 4.
So, now I'm here seeing what I can learn (learning is a good thing), and what I can do to help my son. I hate seeing him have problems and I want to help him as best I can. So, I look forward to learning more.
Yeah, first I thought I was bad when it came to socializing and that's it. Several months ago I came across the Wired test, I took it and scored 35, I felt like the questions were describing me or something, I did more research on Asperger's Syndrome, Autism, and Social Phobia, I think I fit as an aspie the best.
Great that you're trying to help your son too, especially that he's still young, hopefully this will help him understand his problem and try to overcome it, good luck to you both
Knowing that I'm not alone feels good, it makes things easier when it comes to seeking help or understanding/solving problems.
Glad to know we have another OSS geek here. I'm a gentoo developer (http://gentoo.org) but I haven't had enough time to develop since school started. I hope you enjoy the site. I don't have much time to post being so busy with school and all, but I try to talk. BTW, nice avatar lol.
