Hello, this is my first post to WrongPlanet.Net
I've been a lurker for a while and I think I might fit it. I first heard of asperger's a couple of years ago. I seem to fit almost every characteristic such as; not being able to read body language, uncomfortable with eye contact, not broadcasting my own body language well. I've always had narrow intense interests, especially as a kid. When I focus on a task, I loose track of other important things going on around me.
I have a VERY hard time understanding speech in person, most often when someone is talking too fast or with an accent. Also it's near impossible for me to hear people in a noisy environment. The weird (and unfortunate) thing is I can hear all the individual nuances of the noises well. Often I will speak too loudly in the noisy environment because I keep thinking everyone else has as hard of a time hearing voices as I do. Of course this is upsetting to other people when I shout.
Anyhow, I've never been diagnosed with this, but I feel I should see a specialist. I also have very mild motor tic symptoms. Often a head twitch, or more recently I keep flecking the muscles of my left leg. It's always just one twitch, if I find a new one, the old one goes away. The leg twitch is not noticeable to others, my leg just get tired after a while.
I'm interested with symptoms of Asperger's in the media and popular culture. In the FOX TV show 24, Chloe O'Brian shows sings of Asperger's, as well as Dr. Brennan in the show Bones, also on FOX. Odd both my examples are women. There's also a song called Solitary Shell by the band Dream Theater. This song seems to describe how I am, even before I heard of Asperger's
I think I should seek help with some kind of local support group. How do you all get support for yourself?
That's all, thanks for reading
