When I write, I look like someone possessed of learning and eloquence.

When I go up to folks in real life, I mumble, smile nervously, and reveal the full extent of my social inadequacy.

I am not merely an autist but an autiste; yes indeed, I have made an art form out of my autism.

My paintbrush sometimes passes with wide strokes and sometimes with thin; but the palette is always the same.

How were you diagnosed?

I was referred to a psychiatrist who specializes in things like autism/Asperger's as well as personality disorders.

I had to visit this guy three times and answer all sorts of questions and do little games with him before he gave me my official diagnosis.

But the diagnosis turned out not to help very much; I mean, I try to tell my family and they don't want to know. And I can never bring myself to tell friends or employers.

And that's why the only place I can talk about it is here ... where I'm free to write, and don't have to speak a word.
