Hello,

my name is Zach.

I just joined and hope to learn a lot and meet some interesting like-minded people.

I have never been formally diagnosed, but when I was born I had very odd traits such as, raising myself up on my hands when I was only a few weeks old, being very stiff and rigid as a baby, never sleeping, and being intolerable, the smallest of noises woke me up, did not want to be touched, hugged or otherwise consoled and a lot of other things. I was placed on medication when I was only 9 years old because the psychiatrist did not know what else to do. I went off medication for so-called "schizo-affective disorder" a little over a year ago after being on it for over half of my life. I have a strange "hand flapping-like gesture that happens when I get excited about something or am happy about an accomplishment I have made. I was home-schooled because I could not handle the social anxiety and overwhelming sounds and other things in the environment; everything was loud and in my face. I am currently seeing a neurologist who is the first one I have been to about something like this for many, many years. It is encouraging that the first thing he mentioned, and my mother has asked countless doctors if it could be this, is some type of autism. I am scheduled to have an EEG and he seems very willing to explore into what may be causing my problems. The first thing he said about my previous experience with the psychiatrist was, " 6 year olds cannot have schizo-affective disorder, and none of what you are describing fits that diagnosis." So, now I almost feel like I have been misdiagnosed and put into a zombie-state on high doses of medication for all the wrong reasons. I am happy to be a part of the forums and look forward to meeting you all!

Thanks for having me.

Zach

He's right--that can't be a diagnosis for a child. I'm sorry you had to go through all that--misdiagnoses that lead to improper treatment (especially those involving psychotropic meds) are horrible. Diagnosing is still an inexact science, but still....

Welcome to WP. What you described sounds very much like autism. I'm glad you found us and hope you find the answers you're looking for. :)

Welcome, young planeteer! May I ask how old you are now? Were you born in 1987?
