Hey everyone,

I'm an eighteen year old neurotypical with an autistic sibling who is high functioning. I'm recovering from depression with sunshine, exercise, and a vegan diet. I am writing a paper on Autism and wanted to know, how does it feel when others don't understand your autism?

Anyways, thanks for reading :)
I'm pretty laid back and am willing to talk about anything. One of my dearest friends has Aspergers, his name is Theo. He

Welcome to WP, Kat!

... to tell you the truth, your name and description of yourself has a lot in common with one of my ex-girlfriends, so I was a little anxious, forgive me. Let's just say I'm like a male version of Ramona Flowers when it comes to past love lives. (+1 rank in Pop Culture and Current Films if you get that reference!)

That said, welcome to WP. I'm glad that as a neurotypical you are taking the time to learn about us, rather than just going off stereotypes. I commend you for that, and I hope your stay here is enlightening and enjoyable.

And to answer your question, a lot of people don't really understand autism fully, but if they at least try and understand that it's not a disease and it's not a situation where someone should be saying, "Oh that poor kid he has autism" like it's cancer or AIDS (which believe me have been used as metaphors to describe it before) then I think they understand us enough. Autism is NOT a disease, nor is it essentially terminal or life-crippling. We just have learn to cope with it, it doesn't make us any worse off as long as we find a way to cope with it. It's not the freaking end of the world.

That said, have a nice night.

~Roxas

When others don't understand my autism, it feels OK. I don't understand the bloody thing either, except from the inside. Most everyone else is on the outside and it looks different to them.

For fifty-two years, I didn't know what autism was. People just didn't understand me back then. Now they don't understand the autism.

Hello everyone and thank you for the warm welcome as well as the replies to my question.

:D

I want to learn as much as possible about autism and Aspergers so I can better understand my brother and educate other neurotypicals about it. I get so frustrated when you guys are labeled and stereotyped. We are no different, we are both human beings. We just think differently and I want other people to see that.

I got tired of reading things on the Internet about autism that were not coming from someone who has it. I want to hear from those who are autistic or Aspergian rather than a bunch of professionals who have only studied it.

Welcome. It feel just like the same when some doesn't understand you or what you do. It is not that different.
