Welcome to WP, Kat!
... to tell you the truth, your name and description of yourself has a lot in common with one of my ex-girlfriends, so I was a little anxious, forgive me. Let's just say I'm like a male version of Ramona Flowers when it comes to past love lives. (+1 rank in Pop Culture and Current Films if you get that reference!)
That said, welcome to WP. I'm glad that as a neurotypical you are taking the time to learn about us, rather than just going off stereotypes. I commend you for that, and I hope your stay here is enlightening and enjoyable.
And to answer your question, a lot of people don't really understand autism fully, but if they at least try and understand that it's not a disease and it's not a situation where someone should be saying, "Oh that poor kid he has autism" like it's cancer or AIDS (which believe me have been used as metaphors to describe it before) then I think they understand us enough. Autism is NOT a disease, nor is it essentially terminal or life-crippling. We just have learn to cope with it, it doesn't make us any worse off as long as we find a way to cope with it. It's not the freaking end of the world.
That said, have a nice night.
~Roxas
