I haven't been to Oregon, but I sure as hell was glad to get out of Hawaii.

Why is that? For some people its too small and suffocating, and if you are white it can be unpleasant- thats the only thing I HATE about Hawaii- its so contradictory when it comes to racism, there are so many different ethnicities here and they get along fine but if you are white your at a big disadvantage. im not white, but being an aspie I see all these hypocrisies amount the people here and can somewhat relate to how white ppl feel when they get harrassed or are treated badly for being outsiders - its like how ive been treated badly/harrassed for being different and awkward. ugh other than that hawaii is amazing though

Things I hate about Hawaii...

The humidity.
Rust
Lack of transportation (where I was)
Expensive food.
Spoiled food that expired a day before it arrived.
Pork dominated meat departments.
Hawaiian prints.
"Mahalo"
Lack of interesting geology.
Too overcast at night to see any stars.
The fact that Honolulu is just a treeless, humid version of Los Angeles.
And yes, there was an underlying hostility towards me because I'm white. Many of the native Hawaiians, when I was around, would switch from perfectly plain English to pidgin..mainly the older women.

One very white (blond hair/blue eyed) girl with me got accused of being racist by some Hawaiian lady and while I didn't know the girl very well, I doubt she was racist towards Hawaiians because I never knew her to be racist and as she knew nothing about Hawaiians or Hawaiian culture, I doubt she had any negative pre-conceived notions, and another girl with her insisted the woman mis-heard part of a conversation which had no racist content at all.

My aunt used to live there and worked in a cafeteria, and was also subject to a lot of hostilities due to the fact that she was white. I know she never did anything to warrant it because she had borderline cognitive issues and had the opinion that everyone was her friend until proven otherwise.

Hawaii was a small nation that was illegally annexed by the US. It could not defend itself and surely would be under Japanese control, or even North Korean control, if the US had left it alone. The Japanese are horribly discrinimatory against even the native people of Japan, the Ainu. Even if it wasn't taken over by another country, it would have been worse off and it would have had more poverty issues than it does now, because in addition to tourism revenue, as a state, it gets federal funding.

In other words, to the Hawaiians who think the US screwed them, and are resentful for what the US did, they would have been a lot more screwed had the US not.

Honestly though, if they succeeded from the nation I wouldn't care one bit.

I'm sorry that you experienced some prejudice and had to see that ugly behaviour. I was discriminated again in Oregon by white people so i know what thats like...but they were mainly hicks and rednecks so I dont even feel bad

I totally agree there...since I was even old enough to think about politics I realized that Hawaii is much better off as being a part of the United States. We enjoy the business that flows in from mainland America in addition to Japan and yes we get federal money. I seriously doubt, acutually I know for a fact that there would be no freeways, no business centers and concentrations of wealth here had it not been for American funding for infrastructure and the business that flows from America. if Hawaii had been left on its own what could it possibly offer ppl, tourism and pineapples? thats not enough to fund the entire state.

The Japanese are xeno phobic to the max, although I am Japanese-American myself I dont relate to real Japanese people. They are super SUPER narcissistic within their own country, meaning if you are different and do anything thats 'not japanese' you are hated on, ostracized and even bullied. of course there are exceptions in certain places but im talking as a whole. The thing is though, Japanese people are super submissive to the locals when in other countries. it seems like they are only meant to either be the master/teacher or the slave/student aand nothing in between. Its understandable that they discriminate , i think Japan is the most homogeneous country on earth....look at how America was when it was predominatly white - it used African Americans as slaves...not much better than what the Japanese did/do to the Ainu...actually we still do it to the Native Americans here so yeah. but if they did control Hawaii they would ,most certainly view us as backwards country folk who arn't civilized...admittedly Japan is very modernized, much more modernized than America so again thats understandable.

And Hawaii will NEVER be able to succeed from the USA, America wont let it happen and i think most ppl in Hawaii udnerstand that being part of a the USA is better than not. Pearl harbor and the multiple military bases here are literally the only defense between China, North Korea and anything that wants to be hostile from the West so im sure the USA would resort to bombing Hawaii before it lets it secede haha.
