Give us a demo. You are on the 30th level of a 40 level building that is on fire. The fire is spreading because fanatics have disabled the sprinker system. It is a dangerous situation. What do you do?

Did the fire start above or below the 30th Floor?

How badly sabotaged was the Sprinkler System? Can it be activated? If it is an electrical fire, then a water-based sprinkler system would not be much use.

At the present time:
* No-one has told you whether it started above or below 30th.
* You have no knowledge of how badly damaged the sprinker system is, or whether it is sabotaged or just disabled or can be re-activated.
* You have no knowledge of how the fire was started.

Modern sprinklers work in the way you describe, or alternatively with a glass bulb containing a fluid that expands when heated (by nearby fire), and then shatters the bulb, unblocking the pipe and allowing water to pass through.

As you know, they are not activated by smoke (despite what Hollywood shows you).

Only the particular sprinklers that are experiencing the heat are activated, not the whole room, level, or building (again despite what Hollywood shows you).

They are not controlled by computer or electricity. There is no central control system for sprinklers, other than the water supply.

i would go and look into the stair well, if there is smojke coming up then i ambove the fire, if the smoke is being draugh down then i am below the fire......

at 30 / 40 floor i am 3/4 of the way up, thus if the building was to fal i might be high enough to run down the back of the building as it fell over.

however i might also be high enough to make a zip line from telephone cable to the nearest building,

is this a pair of tower or a single tower, is the building shaped as a trianhle?

Is that thinking outside the box?

If there was absolutely no way to get out I would go to the roof, and pray. If god does not exist there would be no god to hear my prayers. If god does exist, my prayers might help.

So you think outside the box, eh? I think I might know what you mean. I live with an aspie who thinks outside the box. According to intelligence tests he scores in the top 5% of the population for abstract reasoning ability. I knew he had this gift for "thinking" outside the box even before he took the tests. Some of the things he comes up with are amazing.

But what if doing that angers Satan? You are risking the wrath of Satan! :)

This topic makes me remember one of my favorite RedvsBlue quotes:

Church: *Gives teammate some plan*
Tucker: So you know what you want me to do, but you have no plan on how I should do it?
Church: Exactly!
Tucker: How am I supposed to do that??
Church: I dunno, maybe try thinking outside the box!
Tucker: But I like the box! The box is there for a reason; I feel safe inside the box!

A trick question would require that I supply both a question and then later an answer. However I will not be supplying the answer (there is no particular answer, it is an open-ended question). I wanted mcjagger to answer the question, and in doing so, demonstrate how he thinks outside the box. Considering that I am only providing the question and not the answer, it is impossible for it to be a trick question. All answers are "correct" in this case.
