Hi -
I've been reading the forum almost every day for several weeks, and finally decided to jump in. It has been wonderful getting to know some of you through your posts - I am the mom of a teenager with AS, and I'm trying to do everything I can to help him find his way in the world (but it's not easy!!).
So many of you remind me of him - smart, thoughtful, creative, confused, frustrated, and generally really cool people. Of course, as a mom, I want to minimize the confusion and frustration for him (and you, too, if I can help).
Anyway, my biggest concern for him over the next couple of years will be the transition to college. Boy-genius will do fine academically (especially in math and physics), but the new world with new people and mysterious new rules will surely be tough.
PLEASE pass along any advice you have for us parents or for him!!

When I moved from one school to a bigger school, it was helpful to me to have visited the place a few times before. I knew my way round slightly and it wasn't quite as foreign and confusing as it might have been.

The school I was moving up to held events to raise money, so my mother made took me to as many of these as she could. I probably complained at the time, but it was handy later.

Why don't you place a specific question on the forum... that way you get more answers.
Welcome to the wrong planet.

Okay - to be more specific:

If he is willing to live on-campus, what advice do you have to help make that work?
What's the best way for an Aspie to make one or two friends when he first starts college?
Should he try to get a single dorm room?
If he has to have a roommate - Request a quiet one? Meet before school starts? Lay down ground rules? Reveal AS issues up-front?
How many classes should he attempt the first semester?
Has anyone had experience with university LD services? How did that go?
Is it worthwhile to get a note-taker?
How do you make sure you understand the assignments and when they're due?
How do you make sure you get up on time and get to class at the right time?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Fristly do try and fight for a Learning Support Assianant so that they can remind(more like nag) for homework and to take notes and generally organise the school/college/whatever life to be in order and stable.
