Hi,

I'm new here. I know someone who has asperger's, and I am going to start volunteering to work with children in the spectrum. I have wondered about myself. I don't know if this is an aspie symptom. I'm in my own world a lot, and I often don't hear when people speak to me. My sister says I was much more like this as a child. I take some anti-anxiety medicine, and I think that helps. Someone I know said it seemed like more of a schizo thing. I was wondering if anyone here ever experiences anything like that. I have a diagnosed mood disorder (undefined).

Thanks.

I think the technical answer is no. That is to say, your "symptom" is not any part of the DSM IV diagnostic criteria -- at least not by any reading or interpretation that I can see. I'm sure that lots and lots of people here will identify pretty closely with this, however. (I do.) So, I guess that leaves you ... nowhere. (Sorry.)

Asperger's is a collection of symptoms and seeing single symptoms of autism in the normal population is to be expected, and common.

Hi there.

These tests are by no means conclusive, but they are good starting points:

Hello and welcome to WrongPlanet kikki :)

The "symptom" you described may or may not be meaningful, there is many traits associated with Aspergers and autism, and you would definitely need to have more symptoms then that (in my opinion, I am not a doctor).

I also suggest trying those tests, just to see if you are on the autism spectrum http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt113459.html

See you around on the forums :)

Thanks for the reply. I know it would take more symptoms than one to have asperger's. I appreciate knowing it is not a trait. I know I'd never seen it on a list of symptoms for anything, so I was just wondering what others had experienced. I mentioned it because its a rather annoying symptom. I'm a computer programmer, though, so the ability to tune out is good for programming. It's just bad for relationships.

I took some of those tests and came up with score between could be asperger's to over the line into asperger's. I think when I was young, I was really like the symptoms described, but have become less and less so, starting in college. However, in college, I pretty much only hung out with geeks. One of the tests claimed a relationship between geekiness and asperger's (or maybe it was meant to be humorous).

I'm sorry I probably wasn't clear, I'm sure you knew it would take more then 1 symptom, I just meant that it is hard for us to even form an opinion from just one symptom. And it may or may not be a ASD trait, in other words being in your own world can be a characteristic of autism, but you can be NT and have this trait, the same is true for many AS characteristics. If you have many of the ASD characteristics tho then it starts pointing towards ASD more.

See you around on the forums hopefully :)

Hi kikki and welcome to WP. I can identify with being lost in your own world but as has already been mentioned, the one symptom alone isn't enough to be able to give a clear diagnosis. I hope you find lots of help and info on these forums though :D

On the Aspie Quiz I came out 1/2 Aspie 1/2 NT and I officially have PPD-NOS. Now, I'm not saying that you have an official diagnosis! I really like when people talk about growth and for me, that happened in college because I was away from a somewhat maladaptive atmosphere. Temple Grandin is completely on board with the relationship between geekiness and Aspergers btw :) One thing she mentioned also is that she's always growing in understanding the world she lives in and keeps 'emerging.' I also work with individuals with disabilities, and I try and focus on their strengths and celebrate when they learn something. It helps me see them not just in their weaknesses and reminds me to see myself that way too.

What was your score on the AQ Test? (That's the one scored out of 50.) And the EQ Test? (Scored out of 60.) Those aren't just "for fun" and are definitely not humorous. They would tell a specialist a lot -- i.e., whether to rule out AS or whether to proceed.

I see that you have to pay for most of these tests. Then I would not call them "for fun." But I also would not take tests I have to pay for. I took the IQ test and it wanted me to pay $9.99 per month for something (I got a text on my cell phone). I did not download the results, for there are ways of getting into your personal data if you keep any online. It was also only 10 questions, and I seriously doubt your IQ can be determined in 10 questions.

The following are completely free and anonymous (other than your gender for the second). Nothing to buy, sign up for, agree to, etc. They are also very likely some of the first tests a specialist would have you take. Note, however, that they don't diagnose you; they "screen" you.
