Hi..I'm new to this sight. I am here because I don't know where to turn....my son has been newly diagnosed with severe autism...he's 3 1/2 yrs old and non verbal. His workers say he is considered severe because he is significantly deficit in the 3 areas they look at. He loves to be cuddled and follows me everywhere I go...an all around great kid. My husband and I have not told our families yet and are worried about how and what to exactly tell them. Me personally on the other had....I feel like I have failed him...like if I had done something differently when I was pregnant with my son he would be "normal" (I use that word loosely). Sorry for the ramble....I'm still trying to comprehend what all this means for him and us as a family........but at the end of it all I will still love him the same as always...no diagnosis could ever change that.

at least hes is ez to deal with, i don't find people with sever autism to be dumb, a give in take, he wont ever have any social skills, beyond very basic, and that be hard for him. my unprofessional advice for you is to expose him to a lot of cool stuff, like music and art. let him express him self that way. some of the greatest artist of our time are severely autistic. work with what you can, and try to find some thing for him to work on that he will like.

and don't blame your self, on the positive side, he loves being touch, which will be good for you. im sure it sucks being a mom whos kid doesn't like being hugged or snuggled.

so in closing, look to the bright side of things, hes going to have alot of problems in life, but were one door shuts another opens, maybe with the right environment he can become really good at some thing beyond what a 'normal' person can achieve
