My name is Mario and I'm 27. I was diagnosed with what was called high functioning autism when I was 7 years old and have recently come to find out that aspergers is the category I best fall under. I've struggled with certain social aspects over the years, but have made improvements in one degree or another. While there are many things I like about the current situation in my life, there are still aspects I'm trying to improve and I'm also trying to branch out and try new things. One of the challenges I've faced is finding somebody with the same diagnosis as myself who could understand how socially isolating it can be when you have this diagnosis. My parents were members of a support group when I was young, but we've researched and have as yet found no support groups for adults with aspergers syndrome where I live.
I have a job that I like and do some freelance writing which I find very enjoyable. I love movies and music and have been to many concerts. There's not a whole lot for young people to do where I live. It's a small town and the population is becoming increasingly older. (My sister calls it "the most boring place on the planet.") This adds to the difficulty of making friends.
I'm hoping to make contacts with individuals who share the same interests and challenges I face. I'll be interested to see how some of you have solved some of the problems you've faced.
