I am a mom of a 15 year old boy who has been diagnosed with several things over the years.
6 years old- Bi-polar
7 years old- Depression with Mood disorder
8 1/2 years old- tested, results - Marked Developmental Delay,
Psychiatrist says Autistic, Sorry nothing we can do
Switch Psychiatrist to one who specializes in Autism
9 years old- PDD-NOS, Dysthymia (chronic depression), Sever Anxiety disorder
13 years old- Hospitalized for Suicidal intent- diagnosed Aspergers by hospital staff
15 years old- Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
The FAS was by a University Doctor who has a grant for the study of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and never even met my son. His team was with my son for just under 2 hours and I drank alcohol in the 1st 4 weeks before I knew I was pregnant. but this is now in my sons record and caused us to lose SSI, Respite, and Title-19 that helped with the medications.
After the FAS fiasco I asked the Psychiatrist who specializes in Autism why all the different opinions. These aren't his exact words but it went something like this:
"FAS is just because your son shows enough similar symptoms to include him in the University study, another number basically.
Stop worrying about the words used. The most important thing is your son is on the high end of the Autism spectrum. That is the reason for the PDD-NOS. All of these kids are individuals and don't necessarily need to be labeled. Some things will work for your son and some things wont. Don't limit him to one type of autism because then you limit him to only one avenue for things that will help him live a meaningful life."
So when asked about a Diagnosis I say "my son is a High Functioning Autistic"
He isn't living a meaningful life, In fact life is pretty rough right now. I turned to the Internet to figure out if there isn't something more that can be done to help him lead a happy and meaningful life.
In doing that I found Wrong Plant. So here I am. Hope to be a part of this community. Maybe not on a daily bases but at least several times a week.
