Goals for Our Family
This was supposed to be a blog entry, but something seems wrong with that feature. So I thought I might post it here as an intro... beware, it's long, lol!
It may be a bit late in the year to be making resolutions, but then since when do new beginnings always blossom in January? Spring almost seems more appropriate.
Some brief background in case someone actually reads this:
I am a 33yo SAHM/student. I have a soon-to-be 10 year old son who was finally diagnosed with Asperger's and ADHD last year. I say "finally" because we had been to see many counselors and doctors since he was 5 and never came away with a diagnosis that helped or seemed to fit. Asperger's was hard to hear and I'm still working out what it all really means. He is currently having a very successful year in 4th grade with the help of a new medication he started this past year after his diagnosis.
I also have a soon-to-be 2yo daughter who has had a few challenges already due to my high blood pressure (it was scary high in the 9th month... like 180/120) and obesity. We also had some challenges breastfeeding and gaining weight but she is self-weaned now and doing well. I am getting ready to start a few new healthy habits to improve out families health. I'm hoping I will keep up on documenting these changes we make and the benefits and/or side effects we experience.
Goal #1 - Green Smoothies
I am guiding my families diet using Green Smoothie Girl's 12 Steps to Whole Foods. For anyone who is unfamiliar, green smoothies are made from fresh and/or frozen fruit and greens. I have a wonderful Blentec blender and have been making the smoothies on and off for a few years now, but now I am moving toward a goal of 32oz of green smoothie for myself, 16oz for DS and 4-8oz for DD and DH (he reserves the right to abstain, lol!).
We may eventually work toward being dairy and gluten free, this is just our first step.
My current recipe:
1 cup Pineapple juice (this is my sweetener, so adjust to taste)
Fresh Baby Spinach (I'm measuring by handfuls, as much as I can grab out of the bag in one hand. Started with 1 handful, then 2, working up to the full 10oz bag gradually)
1 apple, cored and cut
1 ripe banana (great way to use up too ripe ones) + or - fresh fruit depending on what's on hand)
2 cups frozen fruit (vary to taste, I've been using blueberries and strawberries, just got frozen pineapple. Frozen mixes work well in this. Berries turn smoothies more purple if you have to deal with green aversion)
Goal #2 - Getting Active
This one is for DS and myself. We are working up to a daily 15 minute minimum, taking Sundays off. We are either walking with a friend or doing Wii Fit Plus. I may also log in steps using my new pedometer. My goal for daily steps is 2500 to begin.
Goal #3 - Getting Control of CHAOS (Can\'t Have Anyone Over Syndrome)
The Household to do list is getting very long indeed... DS and I have our chores to do, I may come up with a reward system for us both. I plan to implement Flylady type routines ultimately. But to begin I will be drawing up a Bedtime routine and hopefully following it tonight.
The idea here is to try and up date regularly, logging in progress and being accountable for working toward these goals. I think that's enough for now, yes?
