From South Florida~, boyfriend might have Asperger's
Hello, everybody! My name is Moonshine Princess (technically moonshine_princess, but that's just so ugly, wouldn't you agree?). I'm a sixteen year old girl. I think I'm neurotypical (I don't have autism and I'm pretty sure I don't have Asperger's, though I think my psychologist disagrees), but I think my boyfriend might have Asperger's which is why I joined. He once told me he was diagnosed with some mental condition, and he once mentioned having extra time on the SAT, but he hasn't wanted to elaborate on that. A friend of mine likes joking that he has Asperger's, but she doesn't really think he has it. The things which make me think he might have Asperger's are his inability to make eye contact with anybody, his clumsiness and lack of physical coordination, and his social awkwardness and tendency to monopolize conversation (if anyone thinks they can help me, I can give a full list of things).
I've checked a lot of sites but each one seems to have different symptoms and for some of them I just can't supply an answer. I was hoping perhaps somebody here could shed some light on it. I know having people on the internet analyze my boyfriend from the description I gave isn't equivalent to a psychologist's diagnosis, but I'm hoping that maybe someone can point me in the right direction. Like "yes, he might have it" or "no, he probably doesn't because of this and that" or maybe even "we don't have enough information to tell." I just want to be able to help him as much as I can, especially since I know he has something and hasn't felt comfortable enough to tell me yet. Someone suggested he might have dyslexia since he dislikes English class, but I can't say anything about that using the information I have, and it doesn't explain the social ineptitude. I just don't think I've ever met someone who avoids eye contact like he does.
Meh, I don't know, I feel like I'm might be too nosy? Or insensitive? Gah, I'm bad at this/ I have a feeling he'll tell me sometime (and then it might turn out he'll have something completely and totally unrelated and I'll be like ) but there are some things he does sometimes that are a little... unexpected? And everyone tells me "oh, he's just like that" but I'm ridiculously paranoid so I immediately jump to the worst conclusion. I think I'm just nosy, blegh.
As for me, I like video games, music, and reading. My main area of interests is linguistics and history. I have a wide range of interests and could carry on a conversation about pretty much anything - except sports. Sports are my weak spot. I could do better talking about fashion than sports, and believe me when I say my fashion sense is something not to be desired. I also like psychology, sociology, Russia, Iceland, and my hobbies include learning languages, drawing, singing and composing music, and listening to music. I'm very awkward socially and I have difficulty making conversation, which is why the internet is a blessing for me. I've seen a few posts in this forum and it seems like a really friendly place, so I hope I'll be able to fit in.
Hello!
The symptoms list and reality are two completely different entities, I think. Looking at the DSM-IV and putting the knowledge into practice, there's a very wide gap between them. I guess the eye contact thing could be a good indicator. Whether there is too much or too little or in evenly spaced intervals, it's difficult to figure out how to time such things...
