Hi Everyone,

I just want to share with you all that last night I told me family of my suspected Aspergers condition. It has taken me almost 1.5 years to tell them, although I had told my girlfriend and a few close friends earlier.

I got a very mixed reaction from each of my family members, from dismissive, disbelief and doubt that there is anything wrong with me to acknowledgment, acceptance and support. Overall, each of my family members support me, BUT some don't appreciate the true nature of the AS condition, or they believe I will "get over it" but changing my mind set after a few counseling sessions!

Initially, I was very emotional in breaking the news to them but later we ended up laughing and joking about it (although both my sister and Mum thought I am over analysing things too much - as I do in my day to day life anyway!) By the end of the night, each family member completed the AQ test from the Wired website (they all had low scores!)

So my next step now is to obtain a formal diagnosis from either a psychologist or psychiatrist, here in Melbourne, Australia. Can anyone locally recommend a good practitioner for an assessment / diagnosis?

Looking forward to you advice!

Hi there.

whilst I disagree with the idea of 'coming out to your family' I can understand why you may. But I sort of liken it to how homosexuals feel the need to tell people they are 'different', it's wrong that our society places so much emphasis on making people feel that they need to do this and explain why they are different and hope they are accepted once they have given their 'difference' a reason.

Anyways, I can recommend, and highly recommended someone at that! Her name is Janine Manjiviona. Her speciality is in Aspergers, she's highly qualified and one of the leaders in her field, in the country and in fact the world.

Best book with her as soon as possibly as she is always in demand.

She's the one who I (my mother, twin sister, younger sister, and two other cousins) got diagnosed with.
