Amazing that with all the time I spend on the internet, I had never seen this site before. Something new every day, I suppose.

So hi! I was diagnosed with AS seven years ago, and before that I;d been thought to have just regular old ADD. Then my mom found some info on AS and showed it to me, I got really into it, and after visiting two different therapists, they both confirmed it. Two and a half years of social therapy later, and now I can hold up a decent conversation...online.

I've always had eye contact issues, even when I try and make myself act "normal". I can be animated with my voice and face when I want to be, but I find it easier to speak with my hands, which is probably why i prefer talking through a keyboard instead of in person, even if it's a lot harder to gauge reactions through a computer screen.

I've never used AS as a crutch or excuse, to me that just seems petty and stupid. I just use it as part of who I am, and I know that my true friends understand my difficulties and still talk to me anyway. I love them to pieces and wouldn;t give them up for the world <3.

My biggest support has come from my mom, who's always said she's behind me 100%. She even directed me to this site, and after reading a few forum posts, I immediately joined. It is such a relief to see people discussing their day-to-day issues and thinking "Hey, me too!" We are all truly special people, and I'm glad I get to be a part of a community like this.

I also have a bad habit of rambling about random things and expecting people to make sense of them. I really need to try and fix that...

Keep on keeping on, my friends. The dark tunnel's getting shorter, bit by bit.

Harder to gauge reactions through a computer screen?

You can gauge reactions? Are you sure you have AS?

Oh wait, this was posted april 1st. You got me.

Hello and Welcome to Wrong Planet.

The tunnel getting shorting bit by bit is scary for me. I wonder what that that light is at the end of the tunnel? :P

It takes some guesswork, but yes, it's possible. As an example, your response suggests you don't take me seriously, and that you're being a jerk for no good reason. Just because someone joined this forum on April 1st does not automatically make them or anything they say a joke.

As for everyone else, thanks for the warm welcome.

You're right, it's possible to gauge reactions without good perception of body language.

I didn't mean to be mean. I initially was just going to point out that difficulty "gauging reactions" /online/ wasn't an AS trait, and then realized the posting date and tried to make a joke of it. Major fail I guess. And I forgot to welcome you to WP! Might have helped the tone a bit if I had.

Yes, I have some skepticism regarding claims of AS-ness... even with official DX, sometimes.

A lot of people come here thinking "these people are loners/shy/weird just like me! I must have AS too!" but of course there's more to it than that - and some of us aren't shy or loners, or even especially weird. It annoys me a little, especially the ones that clearly have something else.

I liked the bit about "hold up a decent conversation... online".

Welcome to WP
