Hello, my name is Robert. I live in Washington (state).

I visisted several web sites on Asperger's that described a number of characteristics typical of Aspies that I had also. I first visited a non-profit center specliazing in Autism spectrum disorders in May to find out if I really had it. There were a lot of time gaps between steps in the process, thus it was only today that they finally told me -- a confirmed positive diagnosis for Asperger's. (I'm still awaiting the detailed report.)

My parents took me to a succession of therapists when I was a child. I only remember the last of them, a psychiatrist. My mother recently told me that he told them to stop bringing me because he couldn't do anything for me. Of course, being as this was around 1970 it was impossible for anyone in the US to have come up with a diagnosis of Asperger's.

It was fortunate for the diagnosis process that my mother is still alive (at age 80), as she provided significant information to them about my early childhood years that I could not possibly have provided myself.

I have provided additional information about myself in the "questions about you 2" topic.

What was your reaction when you were diagnosed?
Was it positive, negative or both?

Welcome Robert.

I've read your other post and I have a quick suggestion...if you haven't already, please consider calling the Washington Society of CPAs and find out what the educational requirments are there to sit for the CPA exam...it varies by state.

If I may be so bold as to offer a suggestion? If you go that route you probably want to go into industry or government instead of public accounting. I washed out because I wasn't able to to "wine and dine" the clients to the degree necessary. Its really a more people pleasing position than most people realize. This is something I believe many people with ASDs would find difficult or unpleasent.

Again, welcome.

Welcome Robert,

So, you know finally that you have Aspergers

I was diagnosed this year at the age of 36 with Aspergers.

I wish you all the best in the coming period. I am still in the struggle how to put the dx in to my life.

Regards,
BFB

Today I found this webiste by accident, a now 39 year old man tells about his diagnosis on Aspergers three years ago. You might find this interesting:

Hmm, sounds kind of odd to get "congratulations" for something like this.

I'm afraid in this case "nonprofit" definitely did not translate to "free". The initial consultation there (with the sponsoring neurologist) was $350, and I had to make the appointment nearly three months in advance. Then there was a second appointment at the neurologist's own office, which had a standard doctor's office fee. The final diagnostic session was performed by an assistant who charged $45 per hour (including for time needed to talk to my mother and write the final report.) What's more, I had no insurance that would cover any of this, unless you count parental help.

I think what was meant by the congrats was that, now that you know that you aren't crazy, you can begin on a path that will eventually lead to some peace and, if you're one of the fortunate, some happiness.

Bon Voyage!

Isn't diagnosis just about people "beeing sure" that a certain person is different?

I could think that a person has AS, but maybe not be sure...
so maybe that's the dividing line between me and psychologists.

Welcome

I am a CPA about your age. Going to have a look at "questions about you 2" and will answer some myself.

:)
