Hello Everyone,

I have been lurking for some time, well, really consuming everything I can find out from WP and other sources as my wife presented the idea to me that I may have Asperger's. I know that so so so many things that others describe fit really well with the challenges and struggles I have faced.

I have gone through any number of obsessions and now it seems as though I am obsessed with everything as long as I feel like I am still learning things. It matters not if these things are practical or not. I still have to consume information all of the time. If it means reading the labels on food containers when I get dragged to the grocers, so be it.

The sense of isolation and lack of understanding of other humans has been a constant challenge. I have never associated with my peer group as a child or now as an adult. That's one of the primary reasons I work with computers. They have a set of rules that can be learned and behave in a way that we can understand. People are not like that at all. They seem to be constantly changing the rules of interaction and information exchange.

I'm honestly grateful for this community and the opportunity to learn about this and it's potential positive consequences in my life. I'm also grateful for all of you and the work you have already done, both in the forums, and in your lives.

Please feel free to ask me anything and/or point me to any resources you think might be helpful.

Thank you.

Z

It gives a good feeling in my stomach when someone comes and says "I've been struggling for awhile and it's great to finally have some answers and support at last" welcome :D

Hi Zir0,

Wow, I have only been a member here for about 2 hours, and already I have met so many people that I seem to have a lot in common with. After spending so much of my life apparently not having a lot in common with pretty much everybody I met, I feel like a desert survivor who has finally made it to an oasis.

You said "I have gone through any number of obsessions and now it seems as though I am obsessed with everything as long as I feel like I am still learning things." I know that experience. I live it daily. My past is strewn with half completed projects, things that took my attention for a while and that I really want to get back to someday. I don't have "hobbies" any more, instead I have "projects". That was a deliberate decision I made for myself a long time ago, to compensate for this effect in my life.

I also enjoyed what you said about computers. It is funny, because many people around me (such as my wife, for instance), would say the exact opposite, that computers are illogical, they crash unexpectedly, lock themselves up in loops, and do all kinds of weird things that they cannot understand. However, as seems to be the way with you, I "get" computers. I actually understand them. They make sense to me. They are definitely logical. If at first you don't understand what a computer is doing, you can always investigate deeper to find the answer. This doesn't always seem to be the way with interpersonal relationships. A computer will not tell you one thing, but secretly be thinking something else.

I look forward to further discussions with you on the WrongPlanet forums.

Kind regards,

Ron.

Computers are made up of ones and zeros, no matter how complicated or sophisticated their programs and parts, it is still just ones and zeros at the end. If something happens and you do not know why, you dig and dig and dig, like an archaeologist, until you find the answer. It will always be there. These machines do not have agendas, yet. Skynet is still a few years off. :)

I like your idea with the projects versus hobbies. I also have a goodly number of things about that are "in process" and will likely never seen them completed. I may have to incorporate that into my work flow.

Good ideas, there. Thanks!! !

@Phonic-
Thanks! I imagine that you have seen a fair number of people come in WP and discover a new world for themselves. It has to be rewarding knowing you are a part of that. I hope I get that chance too! Maybe even I can help someone, too!

Haha, The Terminator movies were in the NZ news recently. Our Government have just passed a silly law about p2p filesharing. Do a Google search for "MP Jonathan Young's Skynet comparison" for a really funny situation of a politician who obviously doesn't know the difference between the Internet and his own left elbow, comparing the "Internet of today" with Skynet.
