Aloha from Hawai`i!

I am reading and learning a lot about Asperger's Syndrome (AS) lately. I feel like somebody turned on the light in my life and opened my eyes

My Dad may have had AS from some of the things I remember about him. He never "fit in" socially.

I was on ADHD meds for a time around first or second grade. My parents did not like what it did to me so they had to put up with me being hyper. (They did not like me being hyper too much either. LOL!) I never "fit in" growing up and I still don't. I usually have only one really good friend or none. I felt very shy as a child. I also get migraine headaches.

My brother also shows AS tendencies. He has a son (my nephew) who is diagnosed with PDD-NOS.

I am thinking about getting evaluated to see if I do get officially diagnosed with AS. Is there anything good or bad with having AS on my official record?

Thanks,

It is so cool to be here.

Now it feels like I have found some people who understand what I have been through.

I am not alone anymore.

If people get bored with me and walk away or change the subject while I am talking am I an invisible man?

Welcome!! !

First of all you need to think for what you want to use a dx? And, if it can be any help for you, in study ect.
Im 44 and got a dx, some 6 weeks ago, primarily to push for a dx of one of my tree kids! - As she's not doing to well in school.
If she didn't have problems, i'd propably be satisfied being selfdiagnosed!

I dont know how it works in US, but here in Denmark It could close some doors to have a official dx. Both when it comes to certain educations,
and jobs in public service ect.

But im sure theres someone here that can tell more about that...

Thanks Hauge,

My son has ADD and we just had a meeting at his school with two counselors, the vice-principle and his teacher. We, and they. suspect that the issues my son is having at school may be due to Asperger's Syndrome. He has an appointment to get evaluated soon.

I don't know if I "need" an official DX. I want to know because it would help explain a lot of my issues growing up and now. But, I don't want to get shoved into a pigeon hole with a label if it allows others (NTs) to exclude me from anything. I don't want to be discriminated against even more than ever because of an official label of Aspie. I hope that this is not an issue for too many people and I hope that we live in a more enlightened world these days than they used to be back when you were either "normal" or not.

I think that I don't really care too much what others think about me anymore. It won't make me have any less friends in the real world to be called an Aspie. I don't really have any close friends now. They always seem to drift or fade away. I just don't want to be shut out of any jobs or anything.

Aloha

I took the Aspie test back on 2/17/2011 and I think I was answering based on what I thought were my desired goals or values for each question. Here are my results from back then:
Your Aspie score: 107 of 200
Your neurotypical (non-autistic) score: 112 of 200
You seem to have both Aspie and neurotypical traits

I just retook the aspi-quiz. I tried to be very honest with my answers and not answer the questions with my ideal goals for behavior. In other words I tried to answer more as things have been and/or are in my life instead of using my behavior values/goals as a basis for answering.

My new results are very much more Aspie this time.

Here are the results of today’s test:

Your Aspie score: 147 of 200
Your neurotypical (non-autistic) score: 63 of 200
You are very likely an Aspie

OK!

With the old results i'd say something were not consistent...
The new test does give some indications that You are on the right path...

As i dont know how the society behaves where you live, i really can't adwise You more than already done.
But in these "enlightened times" theres still a lot of misunderstanding, and misjudging to cope with!
Mostly its possibly to filter in whom to tell, and not. But as stated before, this isn't always the whole truth...

Is there a chance of a association for AS/ASD in Hawai'i? If so I'd try to contact them for adwise!

Once more, the best of luck for your family and You!

Thanks for the welcome messages!

I just changed my avatar to a Jackson's Chameleon photo that I took in front of a neighbors home. He was climbing a rope into their tree. Sometimes, it feels like I am hanging on to the end of my rope.

I think that a chameleon is a great avatar because many times growing up I felt like I needed to try and be like a chameleon. Chameleons change their colors to blend in with their surroundings. I felt like I needed to change to blend in with the NTs around me so that I didn't stand out too much.

Anyone that was too different got picked on by the other children or even by the teachers. I even had a teacher make fun of me by giving me the nickname of "Flash" because I took too long to get my thoughts together when asked questions.

I wonder how many Aspies had to be Chameleons to fit in? Do you have any stories about this?

Thanks again! :)

I was always pushed to be "normal" and felt rejected by family members who wanted me to be normal when I didn't meet that bar. There was a part of beating myself up for not being 'like other people.' Yet, I definitely pushed myself to learn basic social skills in adapting to fit in. It seems that there's a balance between understanding your differences and adapting to them as well as learning what you need to learn to the best of your ability to adapt - maybe not blend in perfectly, but adapt to the world.
