Hello there... I was diagnosed with Aspergers about two years ago and have been reordering myself since then. I am now 40 so it was not exactly new information that there was something going on... I just finally had a name for it. By the time of my diagnosis I had already been on anti-depressants for 23 years and taking mirapex for the sleep issues (thankfully it helps me although not a complete silver bullet).

Recently I have been struggling with another bout of depression which has gone on longer than normal. I see the psychiatrist tomorrow to see what I can do. I hate upping the medication but it beats spending a bunch of money on therapy and straining my family resources more. I did try my company's Employee Assistance Program but the closest therapist they could offer with AS experience was 40 miles away. Generally I have found a lack of familiarity with AS among the therapists I have checked out... probably part of the reason no one recognized it earlier.

I will probably spend a lot of time on the Work forum. Thankfully, I have been able to maintain employment (with periodic changes) for a long time and am willing to help others as best I can.

Also, I am married and have a daughter... that certainly poses challenges that I will seek help on.

And if you have not guessed from my Nickname I really like cats.

My depressions were very short in comparison, but hellish. Hope you pull out of it soon.

Welcome to WrongPlanet. I was nearly forty before I even heard about Aspergers. Yeah, most mental health counselors I have encountered know next to nothing about Aspergers. Hopefully that will change with more public awareness and education. Good luck with your appointment.
