Hello folks,

Well it only took me 34 years to work out why I was a bit "different" but I have to say I am immensely relieved.

I have always felt different from other people but found coping mechanisms to try to hide it (badly) or just buried myself into study or work. In the long run this has paid off and career is going ok although is undoubtedly hindered by weak social skills but on the whole I cannot complain.

I have only had one girlfriend which was a very turbulent time, although I didn't understand why at the time, but this has made a lot of sense of that. I have few friends, which mostly doesn't worry me as much any more although I think I could make more effort.

I don't have an official diagnosis but I have read a huge amount over the past couple of weeks and done most of the online tests. If you find an answer that fits all of the symptoms with no exceptions, I guess you've found what you were looking for. The weird thing was I gave up looking for an answer a long time ago, I had already accepted me as me, I just stumbled across Aspergers, started reading and had an "Ahhh, that explains everything" moment!

I'm not too sure where to go from here. There is so much to learn, but I think more than anything, I would like to use what I have found out to make the most of the future. It is nice not to have to beat myself up for failings, because now I know why.

Be safe,

CAP

Welcome to WrongPlanet

The fact that you have accepted yourself and your relief in discovering why you're different is good to hear. Hope you enjoy your time here :)

Welcome!

I got my diagnosis at 37. It was such a relief. Look online and see if there's an AS support group in your area and ask for a referral to a psychiatrist who does AS diagnoses... that's what I did. My insurance covered it, thank God!

That immense sense of relief has now faded somewhat, but it's definitely lessened my overall self-criticism and anxiety. Getting the diagnosis was key to that though, so I highly recommend it. Keep us posted here. ;)
