Hello. My name is Elaina. I am the mother of two boys. One is diagnosed with autism. He's nine years old. I have been really down and depressed, and live in a very small town with absolutely no resources. My best friend made me promise that I would find a support group to start talking to.

I hope to learn, I hope to be able to help my son. I hope to be able to help myself. Thank you.

I am a guy in my forties who myself (self-diagnoses) am on the Asperger's / Autism Spectrum. I guess I am generally "high functioning" (although in some areas, it sure don't seem that way!).

I have patchy social skills, above average in some areas, below in others. Your son might be similar and this kind of provides an opening, in that teachers and parents can teach skills that play to strengths and be matter-of-fact about shoring up deficiencies. And I'm sorry your community doesn't have support. From what I understand, that is a big, big help.

You should congratulate yourself on doing something positive for your sons and yourself.
I hope you find some answers and support as well as having some fun too.

Schools are supposed to provide education for each pupil appropriate for that pupil, including special ed as needed. This has been established law I think since the 1970s. Of course often schools do not.

Is there a way you could kind of finesse it, going between formal and informal, where the school thinks you're reasonable but they also think they need to do more to help?
