Hi, I'm Melissa and I'm 40 years old. I've suspected that I have AS for a while now but I've avoided looking into it in order to prevent having another mental illness label put on me. I've been diagnosed with major depression, bipolar disorder, and general anxiety disorder with agoraphobia. Is it possible I have all of those AND Asperger, or just AS alone?

I have not sought out treatment or diagnosis yet, and I'm wondering if there's any reason to. There doesn't seem to be a lot that can be done about it except awareness and acceptance, which comes easy on my part, but wouldn't be so easy for my family.

There's been a lot of conflicts in my relationships with my family lately, and I have no friends at all. What should I do?

Thanks for any and all advice. I appreciate any help I can get.

Well I've never had anything other than AS, but I've seen a few people on here who have, so yes, it would be possible.
I'm not sure if there's anything in the way of advice I could give, but I hope you do find some, and welcome to WP :)

I've never responded well to medication that docs have tried to give me for depression or bipolar so I just deal with it. But could these just be side effects of AS or are they separate disorders? It seems to make sense to me now why I'd have varying degrees of depression and anxiety, considering I've tried to be social in the world and never did well at it.

Welcome to Wrong Planet!

Remember, you don't need "friends" who won't be there for you when push comes to shove. All you need is YOURSELF.

Just get the info you need and try to get a diagnosis!

Hey welcome to WP!

Yes you can have all those things. I have AS (undiagnosed) and social phobia and OCD, and ADHD.

I personally think a diagnosis is not that important, if you do not want to be labeled as AS, you do not need to. Just so long as you feel comfortable with who you are, and understand why you are a certain way...

AS almost always comes with a boatload of other conditions like OCD, ADHD, bipolar etc. They are known as "comorbid." I'm not a doctor, but I believe it is best to identify them as part of the AS rather than apply all those labels.
