Hello,

I do not have Aspergers I'm a neuro typical. I am also a trainee clinical psychologist in London and have worked with people with autism for about eight years on and off. I have worked as a home tutor to children, as a class assistant in schools and more recently I carried out a needs assessment for people with Asperger syndrome for the NHS in East London.

Now my research (which is part of my doctorate) is looking at the experience of anxiety for people with AS. I think it is important that we find ways to better supprt people with anxiety.

I have joined this website to try and better understand and get to know the online Asperger community. It seems that this is a very important place to many people. I would also like people to help me with my research but am aware that adverts for such things are not always appreciated.

:?: Perhaps you could tell me how you feel about neurotypical researchers using forums such as this to find participants for their research.

This is a great site and I 'm enjoying being part of it. :D

First of all, I feel compelled to say I'm impressed with your introduction. Very nice.

Second, neurotypical is one word.

Third, I think as far as anxiety goes, the best place to start with is a school. If you start a thread about expriences with bullying, you'll see what I mean. It's hard to explain. I agree with you about the support.

Fourth, going on a website where the majority of posters are aspies (affenctionate nickname for those of us with asperger's - currently under debate as to whether it should be used in the same way as the ' n word', I believe) is a good idea for finding out about Asperger's.

Altough, you may wish to consider the fact that despite the appearance this website projects, us aspies are a minority.

Could you be more specific regarding your research?

Yes, this is a very important place to me. I assure you, if the goverment ever decided to scrap it, I would open a word document and start writing a letter of protest. I know it's not goverment run, I was just trying to think of some suitable imagery.

As to how I feel about neurotypicals using it for their research, it really depends on how you go about it. However, I commend you for seeking information from aspies themselves instead of all this let's-ask-everyone-that-*thinks*-they-know-instead-of-the-people-who-actually-know
****.

Indeed, it is a great website. I can see why you would enjoy it.

Welcome to Wrong Planet!

Also, you may find it interesting and perhaps benefical to your research to start a topic that is generally considered 'heated' in the religon/philsophy/politics forums and watch the WPers discuss it.

Once again, welcome to Wrong planet.

Sorry if that was a long post.

Hi, welcome.

As long as you introduce yourself as you did, so we know who you are and what your interests are I can't see why any researcher should use this forum to find participants for their research. I for one would be more than willing to help you. I used to have anxiety attack and so did my aspie father.

Actually someone suggested we should have a psychologist attached to this website to ask questions.

I must warn you though, some people might feel offended or cornered by your presence here, and attack you verbally. But I'm sure most people wouldent mind at all.

Welcome and thanks for caring :D

Personally I wouldn't mind you looking for researchees (is that the name) here, I mean you wouldn't be forcing them or anything. Actually it could be an interesting experience.

I don't have a problem with it.

Pippa, are you sure you're NT. I mean if you are really NT would you say you were NT or would you just say you think you are probably NT because then you would know you have a few hang ups because you can see them because you are NT, i mean there are delusional people who think they are NT and they would defineatly say they ARE NT but an NT knows there own limitations. A man (or woman) has got to know their limitations.

Sort of a catch 22. If you don't want to say you are NT it proves you are NT but if you do want to say your're NT it shows you may not be NT. :? understand? Maybe you have to read Joseph Heller.

Welcome anyway. :D

Hello again,

Thank you for your posts. I will be more specific about my research in a moment but just to respond to a few posts first.

:? Who are WPers? I'm not good at these typed abbreviations yet?

:!: Interesting point about asking a psychologist questions online. That would be a challenge, the relationships and amount of information a psychologist would have about people would be very different. I may discuss this hypothetically with my collegues.

 No credit card details, sorry. I am who I am, what else can I say?

Now for my research.

I am looking at the everyday worry and anxieties of people with Asperger syndrome. To do this I am running an anonymous online qusetionnaire that asks about everyday worry. I hope to identify what may contribute to the development of worry for people with Asperger syndrome. I hope that with this information we can think about better ways to support people with the many worries that they experience. If you would be interested in reading more or actually participating then please go to following link:

www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=155312119269

I am also about to add a thread to the site inviting people to take part.

The questionnaire uses mostly multiple choice questions and so there is not a lot of room for personal comments. However, please do share any thoughts you might have with me on the site if you would like to.

Thanks again and all the best,

Pippa.

I see no problem with your doing research on us. It might be smart to put a link back to this thread or an online source describing your research into your signature. That way no one would think you were here under a false pretense.

Worry and Anxiety ... nah that's for wimps. We have things like Depression, Paranoia, Bi-Polar disorders, even a couple of people paranoid about developing depression from bi-polar disorders or schizophrenia. You will have a well of info to draw from, continously, if you can make sense of some of it.

WPers are Wrong Planeteers, quite a varied group actually. You will find some inspired genius on many pages along with some self serving trouble making and whining pity parties. Most of us have done some of all three.

One word of caution: refrain from offering any credit card information to animals while you're here. :)

Thanks for the well written intro.

Hi Pippa

Don't take things so literally (that's an Aspie trait). It was a lame attempt at humour. Read Catch22 by Joseph Heller.

Kind regards

Bazza

Hi

Thanks for the posts.

I have started Catch 22 a couple of times, never got very far with it. Perhaps I'll try again one day.

My taking things literally on this site made me wonder if communicating over email like this with people I have never met is quite a challenge. A challenge because I can't hear the innoation in someones voice or see the expression on thier face.

Anyway, enough of the wonderings. Thanks for all your responses and glad to talk with so many WPers.

I'm going to atempt to attach a signiture to my profile now. Wish me luck, this is all new to me.

Pippa
