Mom of 3 & 6 year olds & I decided to join today.
Hello, I am a Mom of a 6 year old and 3 year old. Oldest "grew out " of his developmental delays per the school system (speech/language) and just started Kindergarten and is doing fantastic. After 2 1/2 years of speech language from 3 yrs. to 6 yrs it turns out he is actually verbally gifted. hmmm........
Our 3 year old (turned 3 in June ) was "classified" ASD by our public school system after a evaluation and enrolled in a Developmentally delayed pre- k class. (1 teacher, one aide 10 kids 3yrs- 5 yrs.) The first placement offered was a self contained 3-5 yr. old ASD class with all the children being non verbal.
The speech language therapist we have privately attained Since April felt very strongly against our son being with non verbal children since he is verbal & capable of asking & answering "wh" questions as well as beginning to attempt to start conversations. He also has a great imagination and sense of humor. He knows his ABC's, 123's, colors, shapes, etc. He does great at home and follows directions (3-4 step). He can make a circle & line. He can draw a happy face now.
His weak points are lack of eye contact, joint attention, and engagement. He also has a slight aversion to specific TV shows that his older brother likes to watch. He will cover his ears and ask us to turn it of or change the channel because it is "scary" . (Mickey Mouse, Little Einsteins, etc. ) It is getting better over time, he will say "Mommy it's a scary monster, change it".
He loves to play on the computer on sites like Zula Patrol, Cars online, PBS kids ( Wild Kratts is his favorite)
He loves his Mobi Go & a relative dug out of his closet 2 older versions of Gameboys & a Playstation 1 with like 15 games cd's.
I see many similar behaviors in my 3 year old that I saw in my 6 year old at this age. The differences are that my 6 year old had really great eye contact, engaged & had great joint attentnion. He did not have many words or language skills at 3.
Things seem to be going well so far. His teacher has had no issues with him following directions, having tantrums or any other issues.
She has him working on fine motor skills like holding and using crayons correctly. He just learned all his "emotions" and tells me he is excited when daddy comes home, sad when he can not play Nintendo, etc.
I know for a fact that the IEP team thinks my husband and I are in "denial". I mean we used the whole "least restrictive environment " term in our 3 hour IEP meeting. We are not.... quite the opposite really. If or when the time comes that our 3 year old needs a more restrictive class we will make our decision then. In the meantime let our 3 year old be just that. I refuse to let the school system led me to believe that he is defective & they need them to fix him.
Right now he gets 90 minutes speech/language in school, 60 minutes private at home & we have a college student who is a speech language therapist assistant coming over to play games, read and have fun with him 2 x's a week for about 2-3 hours each time. He loves her. Good times!!
Did I mention that my husbands mom was once told by a Neurologist in Venezuela 35 years ago that my husband had a "brain irritation" and they tried to place him in a similar class as a small child.? He is a great father, provider, worker & has some intense interests that involve technical & mechanical ability.
I'm hoping for the best in regards to both my kids and at the same time being realistic and keeping in mind that the future is always uncertain.
