Well shucks, I just read how one should NOT use their real name... I've always used my real name because I'm an artist and wanted a web presence attached to it.. heck you can just google me and get pages of stuff. Facebook and youtube as well as my dotcom. So now what? delete this account and start again? Perhaps its a symptom; I don't care enough and have no paranoia or fear... yet. My grandma died with dementia shrouded in fear. :?

Is there an official facebook page for wrong planet? hmmm, have to try that..

So, hello from this new member. Perhaps there should be a big warning about using your real name on the stupid sign-in pages.. instead of finding out after the fact...duh!

There are two major reasons for not using your real name, except in a strictly professional context:

Firstly, using your real name isn't a good idea as anyone can simply Google you and find your entire online posting history.

The second reason, related to the first, is that if you end up involving yourself in arguments (both political and non-political), you might end up saying silly things that you later regret but cannot remove as it is cached. As it is linked to your real name, that also means you're far more vulnerable to stalkers and vindictive people, of which the Internet certainly has its fair share.

Just sayin', is all.

If you type in my real name a playboy bunny comes up. It is very strange having the same name as a bunny :)

Also welcome to WP :)

Firstly Tequila, that's exactly what I wanted.. try it.. my name, not yours
Secondly, yup, done that too but I have no regrets about the flames and rants I've left on-line. I almost enjoy being disliked better than liked. I always seems more honest to me.

I'm 55 and can count my friends on one hand.

Hello, tigerleahu.

I make sure to be careful about what I post on this site. Nothing terribly personal or anything of that kind.
And yes. I too use my real name here. One of the nice things about life on the Web for a person with Asperger's
is that you can play at creating an online identity, with one major difference from the way most people use the Web--
the online identity an Aspie creates can be based on that person's actual self.

I agree with using your real name.

I decided a while ago that I am me, and regardless of what others may think of me or my opinions, it will not change who I am.

I protect my sensitive information and privacy by being sensible about what I put online.

If you are not terribly savvy about what you should and should not put online, then not using your real name or disclosing anything about you is probably a good idea. In my opinion going online without being aware of the environment and the implications is no different than signing a contract without reading it. You are simply asking for trouble.

And no, I don't believe that we should make everything completely safe for everyone. Somethings are just not meant for some people. Like me trying to do surgery. Probably not a good plan. I am not physically dexterous enough to do a good job. I don't think I have a right or even justification to demand that a surgical tools and processes should be redesigned to make them accessible to me.

Anyhow, welcome. And congrats for taking responsibility for yourself.
