well, my son who is about to turn 18 and who is the 11th grade is now being tested for asperger's. With the information that i have read, heard or experienced i can honestly say this is going to a new diagnosis. I would like to educate myself as much as possible but have no clue where to begin! there is so much to absorb and so much comes up when googled would really like if someone could point me in a "beginners" direction. I can honestly say that this is a "ahhhh" moment and things have made sense but bummed that it took so long for someone to recognize this since he has had issues since he was 7. he could have benefited from some help at an early age by what i have read. I also have a boyfriend and 2 "normal" teenaged children to educate on this as well and the REALLY dont get or understand his behavior in the least. any suggestions on where to start with me, them and others?

Crimsen, most aspies tend to be obsessed with one thing, or at least a group of things. We tend to be very good at our obsessions. I would encourage your son to parlay whatever his interests are into a way to make a living, if possible. If he gets really good at his interests, it will go a long way toward balancing out his social deficits and possible esteem problems. I also wouldn't worry too much that a diagnosis of AS wasn't made when he was younger. I'm 49, and didn't realize I had AS until about a year ago. I will say that being diagnosed was probably the best day of my life, as I then knew there was a reason I am what I am. But I did begin to figure out how to deal with who I am years ago. It's good to have the diagnosis at any age.

Encourage him to keep trying, including some new things as well as playing to his existing strengths. And provide a baseline and backdrop for when things don't work out, as they sometimes won't.

And Welcome to WP. :bball:

FIrstly welcome, I do hope you learn a lot from here through those with AS and those that have family members that have AS.
I wasn't diagnosed until I was 30! It has explained a lot and given me more confidence as I dont have this big question-mark in my head anymore, I finally have 'less' anxieties.

I wish you and your family all the best.
