Hello, I'm a 23 year-old unemployed recent college graduate who has only recently (in the past few months) begun to learn about autism and Asperger's Syndrome. Out of curiosity, I took the Autism Quotient test online and received a score of 46. After realizing that the score seemed abnormally high, I found another test mentioned on this forum, the Aspie Quiz, and received a score of 185 on that test. However, I do not want to draw any conclusive results from online tests and I do not want to self-diagnose, no matter what scores I received.

I'm already seeing a psychiatrist for anxiety and depression issues, so I brought up the possibility with him. He seemed hesitant to give his opinion on my situation since I am currently in a relationship with an aspie male, and he seems to think that people on the spectrum are not capable of maintaining romantic relationships. I gave him a list of symptoms that I noticed during childhood, adolescence, and now, and he seemed to think that they are characteristic of people who have Asperger's Syndrome.

But that's all that has happened. I have no idea how to ask for a formal evaluation, or if I can even get one through my healthcare provider (Kaiser Permanente). Both my psychiatrist and therapist think that it's more important to get rid of the symptoms than to give me a clear diagnosis. All I want is to know whether or not I have it, so I can see what is changeable with enough effort, and what is due to my nature.

So that's where I'm coming from. No idea if I actually have Asperger's Syndrome or not, but I am more than willing to listen to opinions and advice on the subject. Thanks.

Hello and welcome! There are a number of members, myself included, without a formal diagnosis yet so don't let that stop you from feeling like you belong here.

I am aware of plenty of aspies who have long lasting romantic relationships, I have an aspie wife (we have been together for almost ten years). But I would say that within the autsitic community those who deviate from the 'norm' are more visible. I can think of a few aspies who are openly asexual here but I can not name any person I know in the general population who openly states that they are asexual other than a few monks, nuns and catholic clergy who I happen to know.

Diagnosed under the DSM5 rules with autism spectrum disorder, under DSM4 psychologist said would have been AS (299.80) but I suspect that I am somewhere between 299.80 and 299.00 (Autism) under DSM4.

Hi there! I'm a 24 year old, mostly unemployed recent college graduate. I was just diagnosed a few days ago, and this site was really helpful through that process. You're welcome here even if you're not sure about your aspie status!
