well anyway, heres my intro.

I'm Eric. 22. I'm a college-senior on break. (Not even sure what school I'm enrolled in at this point, lol). I live in Northwestern Ohio. I work at a Hotel as a Front Desk Rep., and I also have my own Self-Employed Small Business (details complicated and secret at this point). I am a freak for Digital Audio and Video and Love my iPod! I Love Football (American) and am a big fan of both the Cleveland Browns (improving) and Ohio State Buckeyes (awesome as usual). I'm mostly into Rock music but will listen to most anything that has some sort of substance and purpose. and I'm of Irish-Ancestry and proud of it!!

I was diagnosed with AS at age 14. i have a very mild case of it. but it still does affect my social life. Merely socializing and interacting with ppl isnt the problem with me. many who know me see as a sanquine type who is willing to talk to anybody (being sanquine and having AS is pretty much an oxymoron). but where i would say AS affects me the most is taking things to the next level. like, ok ive gotten to know this person and i can talk to them no sweat, now whats next?? its like ive never know how to take the next step from becoming an acquaintence to a friend (or if its a person ive more naturally become friends with) from an average friend to a great friend (or girlfriend).

i do, at times, have a fear of rejection that works against me. so yeah, more on my as-related struggles later.

this looks like a cool forum and i look forward to interesting discussion.

later...

-Eric

Hi Eric.

Rather than starting a new topic just for me (oh how ego-centric), i thought I'd introduce myself here, as Eric, I think you have it down pat with your topic, finally people who understand me....

Anyway, I'm 19, and I'm from Western Australia. I was very lucky (it was a total fluke) to find a wonderful man who has been willing to "look after" me, and who is incredibly understanding and sensitive, to marry. We've been married for about 2 months now. I work at my parents landscaping supplies business, part time. I'm totally obsessed with Star Trek: The Next Generation, and I love animals of all shapes and sizes. I'm a card-carrying, wristband-wearing animal rights activist.

I have only just been semi-diagnosed with Aspergers in the last few weeks. I'm going to Perth for the big official diagnosis next month. I'm also hearing impaired (as in deaf in one ear) and being treated for Generalised Anxiety Disorder. As you can imagine, when we found out what AS is, everyone looked at me and let out a big "Oh so that explains it!". Right now, I'm dealing with a lot of anger towards teachers, school counsellors and stuff. School was not easy for me, and the teachers and stuff didnt make it any easier.

Actually, my whole head is in a bit of a muddle. My mum has helped me understand, by explaining a neurotypical's usual response to "me" and how I am. I now understand why my friends have just seemed to fade away, losing interest in me very quickly because my interests are so limited.

The biggest problem affecting me is work. I have had a series of unsuccessful jobs, but no one will ever tell me why I get the proverbial sack. Mum says I am very hard to deal with, and I get obsessed with my job, and annoy the crap out of people.

Anyways, enough with the sob story, it's great to know you folks are here, and I look forward to posting and reading what you have to say.

-Renae

I have quoted your current signature above. Why do people think it is acceptable to say "God Bless" to strangers? I think it is highly insulting and presumptuous.

If you are saying it to someone who you know is a Christian, well fine then, but to say it to someone you do not know is presumptuous.

The next time someone says "God Bless" to me in real life, I will tell them to f*** off, because they have insulted my intelligence.

Geez, emp, pretentious much?

Welcome Eric. Glad to have you, and though I don't currently believe, thanks for the blessing.

emp, you really shouldn't take it like that. To him, because he is religious, saying 'god bless' is his way of conveying his best wishes for you. He doesn't mean it as some sick way of "Bringing You Into The Cult" or anything like that, it's the same as you wishing somebody a good day, nothing more.

With that said, I do understand where you are coming from; I never used to understand why people made such a big deal out of the whole "God Thing", and railed at even the mention of religion, or my potential involvement with it [The Canadian national anthem infuriated me when I was 9]. I looked down on all religion with disdain, seeing it as a weakness, a person's inability to deal with the world as it truly was. I now understand, while maintaining my iron-clad atheism, that having faith in god or allah or the FSM [I hope somebody got that last one] is a really good thing for someone's mental well-being and can be a great thing in general. Even from a young age I have been painfully aware of the mortality of my species, and even now my top priority in life is to just to find a way to keep it going forever. I can certainly understand how having that particular weight lifted from your shoulders would enhance a person's quality of life significantly, to say nothing of the absolute moral compass that the a strong faith provides.

I hope I am not just pissing you off even worse here; I am only trying to help you understand his viewpoint and how his words should be anything but offensive, even to someone who does not share his views [like me].

Dress like a pirate and you will be re-incarnated as a midget. Trust me on this one.

thank you to those that have given me a welcome already.

if i offended anyone by simply saying god bless, then i am sorry. i must say that this is the first time, ever, that i have had to apoligize on the internet or in real life for simply saying that to someone or some people. i guess i just forgot to take into consideration that this is a forum for ppl with AS, and part of having AS is taking things way too seriously.

for example, i like sports, especially football. well part of being a fan is rooting for your favorite team. suppose for example, when talking to a group of ppl about pro football, that i say "my favorite team is the browns", or simply, "Go Browns!". By saying that, am I also at the same time saying "die pittsburgh!" or "f*** the steelers!" or "screw all your teams!" ?? Of course not! so in the same regard, when i say "God Bless", I am NOT also saying "Screw all you athiests!" nor "you're stupid for not believing in god".

saying "god bless" is simply my way of saying "have a good day". for those of you who dont believe in god, simply read it as me saying "have a good day". (and if you cant possibly do that, well, no wonder you're on an AS-related forum, hehe). and those of you who do believe in god, you can interpret it with divine meaning as well as my best wishes for you.

you should also note, that not only do i make small subtle references to god in online forums, but i also do sometimes in real life with friends or when talking to ppl. its never anything thats a huge deal, not like im trying to get you to join a cult, but simply a small and non-threatening reference to a friend of mine. when you like something, you sometimes tend to talk about it. well, i personally believe that god is real and he is the best friend any of us could possibly have. (these are ONLY my beliefs, and i still respect you and like you just the same if you dont share them.
just like some of us have an interest in sports, or movies, or trains, or airplanes, etc., i have an interest in god. Don't tell me to NOT EVER mention the fact that I believe in god because i still will sometimes, in a respectful and non-threatening way.

thank you,

-Eric

I am being called a monumental buffoon by a person who believes in the existence of fairies, mermaids, and gods !

I am being called a monumental buffoon by a person who thinks that a book that states that homosexuals should be killed is a sacred and holy book !

For the record, I do NOT hate christians, but I DO hate unethical and immoral behavior, fraud, manipulation, murder, molestation, etc.

emp, isn't it kinda pretentious to assume that just because someone believes in 'God, they also believe in faries and mermaids?

Mermaids have a reasonable explantation.
