Happy New Year!

My 7-year-old son was diagnosed four years ago with AS. After getting some great support in preschool, he's now in mainstream elementary school. He's doing great academically, but has social challenges and, more recently, behavior issues. I'm concerned about how he'll get along in school and other places as he gets older. I hope to learn from your experience, and also share some of my mine.

I've always considered myself introverted and socially inept, but recently have been wondering if I too have AS. I get by socially, but it takes a lot of effort. I can hold a conversation if it's a topic I can discuss in some depth, but small talk is a foreign state of mind for me. I'm much more comfortable writing to most people than speaking to them in person. I tend to fixate on topics that interest me. Thinking back on my childhood, most of these traits were even more pronounced. I'll ask my doctor this week for a referral for testing. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Welcome to WP!
That happens. After my diagnosis, my mom became convinced she is an Aspie too. She's very different than I am (our personalities are almost opposite), but we're also quite similar at the same time. It's odd.

Welcome to Wrong Planet.

It's nice to see a father actually genuinely care about their child. Get to know him a little better, his perspective may surprise you. :)

That is a little harsh 8O

I can only presume that comment comes from personal experience but it's a bit of a cruel statement to suggest that most fathers don't genuinely care about their kids. If I have misconstrued then please forgive/ignore.

Thank you for the welcome.

I'm having second thoughts about getting a diagnosis. Although it would be nice to have a qualified opinion, I need to look further into the benefits versus drawbacks of having that diagnosis in my records.

Welcome to WrongPlanet PassingThrough. I also gotta commend you that you're there for your son and he's doing well in school despite his AS. :)
