I'm 17, recently diagnosed, and is it weird that I'm afraid of not being accepted on a website for Aspies?

Ehh... really intimidated...

My Mom told me about this website, and it took me a while to get the courage to make an account. I'm almost always on the internet so I'm used to making accounts of course, but this is one of those "fitting in" places...

Eeehhhh... But you know, I always end up saying the wrong thing or doing something wrong in some way and then I freak out and take a long time to recover...

I have really difficult time picking up on social queues, and I hardly know what's socially acceptable to say and what isn't.

Not at all weird, I don't think. Welcome!

Hi Koi! Welcome to Wrong Planet! If you are on the Autism/Asperger's spectrum, you already fit in. Check out the different forums and articles here. They are interesting and helpful.

Don't worry about saying the wrong thing or missing social cues. There are very simple social rules here. Just don't be too rude to people, and don't spam them, and other common sense stuff like that. After all, everyone here has trouble with social cues, and social talk.

And remember, you are among friends here at WP. :D

Hi Koi, yes I say the right thing at the wrong time and the wrong thing at the right time. Sometimes I just wonder what I said wrong. At least this is a place where people of all ages can understand one another. So, please do feel accepted.

Hi Koi - WP is one of those places where you can say things and not worry about it too much which is good - it's like a place to come and off load.

In the 'real world' I seldom say the wrong thing because I choose to say very little.
If I said what I really think most of the time, I would be disliked by a lot of people.
Keeping my mouth shut doesn't make me loved, it just kind of keeps me neutral.
It's not that much fun being neutral but the alternative would be to 'act' like 'them'
I find you have to 'act like them' a little (at work and such) so as not to stand out too much but it always gives me a feeling I don't like.

To sum up -
Not fitting in = not good
Being (or acting) like them = not good (don't really want to go there)

So maybe just saying things even if others don't like it is the thing to do!

Oh man this is something I learned in elementary school. I would always blurt things out in class. I would always speak my mind no matter what. But then I got teased, and people laughed at me. And I remained quiet for many years after that.

And thank you guys... c: I feel better now.

If anything, this is the one place you can come, be yourself, and not be judged for it. We all know we're not "normal", and, for the most part, we embrace it. :) I've been saying things here that I definitely wouldn't say in the average message board. Most places, with people who don't understand, are more harsh or critical. But here, we're all in the same boat (or, for the few NTs here, they understand us and accept us), so no worries. :D Just keep reading around. You'll quickly see that many of us have had the same experiences and problems to overcome. I think you'll find that you've finally found some people who actually get you. That's how I felt the first time I came here. It's like a breath of fresh air!

Also, welcome!
